Between the time she was a Brill Building mainstay and her re-emergence as an early '70s superstar, Carole King recorded a one-shot album as a member of the City, a trio consisting of King on piano and vocals, Danny Kortchmar on guitar and vocals and Charles Larkey on bass, with Jim Gordon (of the Derek & the Dominoes) sitting in on drums. The result was one of the most interesting, rewarding, and wonderful detours in King's career, and one that has stubbornly resisted reissue in her U.S. catalog. The group didn't last, and less than a year later King emerged as a solo performer on Writer, and then came Tapestry...

The original LP became a collector's item with a triple-digit price and was even bootlegged with a bad black-and-white reproduction of the original jacket. (…)

The City has more of an integrated ensemble sound, and less prominence to King, than her subsequent records, even though she used bigger backing groups on most of her solo sides. The album squeezes the best out of her voice (and piano, which sounds gloriously resonant). The soft but clear, gently tapped percussion in the opening seconds of "Snow Queen," and the close-up twang and crunch of Danny Kortchmar's guitar on "Wasn't Born to Follow," also enhance the listening.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small, neat, circular cutout hole in one of the corners

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam and spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the back panel

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
