Eva Taylor was a talented entertainer and Blues singer and was one of the first African-American singers to be heard on radio. She started out as child actor in a traveling revue that toured the world visiting Europe, Australia and New Zealand between 1900 and 1920. In 1920 she moved to New York City, where she became a popular singer in the night clubs of Harlem. The following year she married pianist, publisher and producer Clarence Williams. The couple collaborated on many projects, including dozens of songs, a musical revue called "Bottomland", and radio programs. They remained married until Williams' death in 1965. In 1922 Taylor made her first record for the African-American owned Black Swan label, who billed her as "The Dixie Nightingale". She would continue to record dozens of Blues, Jazz and popular sides for Okeh and Columbia thoughout the 1920s and 1930s. She was the lead singer on several of Williams' classic Blue Five recording dates.

Sara Martin was a popular classic blues singer in the 1920s and early '30s, having recorded with Clarence Williams on the Okeh label.

Early Years

Sara Martin was born in Louisville, Kentucky on June 18, 1884. She began her career as a vaudeville singer in Illinois, and by 1915 was singing on the African-American vaudeville circuit.

Recording Career

In 1922 Clarence Williams signed Sara Martin to a recording contract with Okeh Records, writing and playing piano on a number of her early records. Martin was said to have excelled as a live performer and was a star on the TOBA circuit in the early 1920s. She had a deep, full-bodied voice that compared favorably with Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey, but lacked their emotional punch. She often sounded a bit wooden, as if she was reading the lyrics on her records, although her diction was impeccable. But on stage she was noted for an especially dramatic performing style, and she was among the most-recorded of the classic blues singers.

Martin recorded four sides with Clarence Williams in 1928 that included King Oliver on cornet, including "Death Sting Me Blues." While primarily a popular singer, Martin could get low down on the blues and was billed as the "famous moanin' mama" as well as "the colored Sophie Tucker," reflecting her dual roles as a Blues and vaudeville performer. She recorded with Okeh until 1928, and toured until the early 1930s.

In 1929 Sara Martin appeared in the film Hello, Bill with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. The following year she appeared in the first all African-American sound film, Darktown Revue. As the female blues craze faded in the early 1930s, she retired from show business and sang only gospel music.

Martin returned to her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky during the Depression and ran a nursing home. She died of a stroke on May 24, 1955.

Sara Martin also recorded under the names of Margaret Johnson and Sally Roberts.
