Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: ultra clean and highly attractive with only a couple of light and faint spindle marks on side one and around four on side two, no wear around the hole area. Yes another from that lovely collection just acquired, this has probably only been played once or twice.

Cat Number: SDN.R.2.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Very scarce: a highly collectable label for prog connoisseurs. The Nova series on Decca featured bands and artists that had minimal commercial potential and few sold in any great numbers.

Brief Info: An extraordinary work and the debut album from this progressive duo. A cult classic album and one most progressive connoisseurs rate very highly. Mick Hutchinson is a highly gifted guitarist and here he pushes the instrument to new boundaries. Superbly recorded this is a wonderfully creative album blending rock with blues, jazz and Eastern elements. Being on Nova, this was thought to have little commercial potential by Decca and its hardly the most common album you will ever see. Something of a ‘lost’ classic on vinyl, finding a better example of this record will prove near impossible. This one plays just about as perfect as vinyl ever will and looks almost like new. The cover has a few minor blemishes but still looks very nice indeed. The Nova label bands and artists are highly sort-after by specialist collectors and this must rank as one of the very best on this rare label.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Quite High.

Cover Grade and Format: EX a single format with front Clarifoil laminate. The back has the peep-hole mono/stereo indicator. The original blue inner is included which denotes this is a stereo copy. Printed and made in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd.

Lamination & Front: The laminate is very shiny indeed and very clear too. Practically all is fully adhered which is somewhat unusual on this cover, just a couple of fine edge lifts that have modest visibility. There is slight waviness to both sides and as there seems no evidence of any liquid spills it could be caused by the laminate tightening and rippling the card slightly. Of when the laminate contracts with age, it often lifts from the cover’s surface but mild compression of the card can happen instead, it depends on how securely the laminate is attached. There are a few light surface marks and a crease near the top left corner area but less than moderate. The laminate ends some distance from full width on the right edge but this exposed strip shows little wear, a mild surface rub near the centre only and a very small touch-in on the black. A very fine front overall, it will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Back: The back shows mild grubbiness near the edges and the wave isi slightly more pronounced near the right bottom corner area but hardly major and certainly not serious. The laminate wraps around the spine and the end has a fine mild grime-line, very fine indeed actually. No rubbing or ringwear and the peep-hole is pristine. Overall a fine back too that’s only mildly aged.

Top Edge: No wear but not dead straight.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: The spine is near perfect: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. The ends are gently tapered in manufacture.

Corners: All four are very neat indeed and retain great shape with barely any wear at all.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very rare late 60’s cover, not perfect but being as scarce as it is, it’s one that will prove difficult to find much better. This elusive item should please many collectors if not the perfectionists.

The Inner: Little short of Mint(-). The typical Decca-style blue inner denoting a stereo copy to fill the peep-hole on the back cover. This is polylined and looks fantastic with a very clear and neat, undamaged window. All edges secure with little creasing at all. A slight ring arc at the bottom of each side.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and it could quite easily pass for new with barely a noteworthy blemish to be seen. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please all collectors, they hardly get better than this.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high indeed with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A beautifully produced album with genuine high fidelity sound, this sounds like its just been made and at forty years old, this is little short of remarkable. The ‘lost’ prog gem that time has forgotten, I doubt if this has seen the light of day for decades. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for what is a challenging album. Complex guitar sounds and multi-instrumentation, this is a piece de resistance of engineering and the guitar sounds are little short of extraordindary. All being equal, this should have sold a lot of copies and with more promotion it probably would have done but like so many acts on this cult label, many are well-kept secrets. Few copies will even match this copy, let-alone outperform it - the ultimate first pressed example for the audiophile collector. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record only my second ever and it’s been some considerable time since I had the first. This record will prove near impossible to find better and can be very strongly recommended. The cover may not be perfect but the record itself is little short.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
