Flashback to the legendary 'Emergency Club' of Georgetown circa 1970-1974, one of the clubs where Claude Jones held court - THE KING OF SLANG (aka Rhode Island Rag), their infamous break song. (Infamous because it signaled they were going to take a break and we all wanted them to play on and on.) DC rock fans of the era will remember the constant buzz generated by this popular band and the many great musicians who frequently played or shared the bill with them, including members of Nils Lofgren’s ‘Grin' and Tom Guernsey’s ‘Hangmen’, a time long ago but not forgotten.
CONDITION: Unplayed, New Old Store Stock (NOS) in storage since the mid-70’s; Record is MINT (M); B&W Picture Sleeve is NEAR MINT (M-), due to slight toning to the edges / B&W Lyric Insert also Near Mint (M-), folded to fit inside sleeve / for best view, please supersize photo at very top of this webpage and examine all 5 picture carefully
RAREST OF THE RARE: Goldmine Magazine called this 45rpm single an "unobtanium masterpiece". The original 7 inch pressing of Emmylou Harris singing "ALL THE KING'S HORSES," (A lullaby by John Guernsey). Due to the sudden and unexpected conflict with Emmylou's then new record company, Sweet Breeze was not allowed to associate her name on this record, necessitating her using the name of her cat as a pseudonym - Hannah Brown. This story was detailed in Goldmine Magazine, the record collector’s bible, in an article outlining Emmylou’s discography, which stated this record was absolutely impossible to find, due to the fact so few copies were pressed and fewer copies sold, maybe 1,500. To further authenticate, you can find this 45 mentioned in many on-line Emmylou Harris discographies, which clearly specifies this single was issued as the John Guernsey Group featuring Hannah Brown. This single is an original first pressing released in 1974 on Washington, DC’s enigmatic SWEET BREEZE record label. John Guernsey, along with his brother Tom, was an original member of the Reekers aka The Hangmen, a hugely popular ‘60s DC rock band, known for “What A Girl Can’t Do” local hit single among others. The record was a regional hit in the Washington, DC area, where Emmylou briefly lived and at the time was still performing.
