NICE original 1968 first pressing on the highly collected 360 Sound label of Columbia Records, from the sixties ... One of the truly great and highly acclaimed BYRDS albums...this baby is filled with 'high vibes' tracks, fresh and clean with McGuinn's 12-string blending in all over the place ...the album includes experiemental 'spacey' tracks that have an airy psych feel ...Highlights are everywhere and including "Artifical Energy", "Goin' Back", "Wasn't Born To Follow" & "Change Is Now" ...
If anybody is looking for the absolute best in psychedelic folk, this is the place to find it. Celestial harmonies, impeccable guitar work, wonderfully recorded, inventive as you would expect for an album from 1968. There are occasional road-trips into California Country, foreshadowing the entire genre to come, some lift-offs into orbit, but to this day, "Goin' Back" can yank tears from your eyes and put a quiver in your voice. Nobody did it better, then or now. Even the first song does not wipe away the anticipation of hearing a dud of an album; "Artificial Energy" is full of horns and a little cheese that reminds one of The Doors' "Soft Parade."
"Goin' Back" snaps things back to a more traditional Byrds setting. The harmonic 'la-la-la-la's in the middle are simply beautiful. It might begin to dawn on one that this is closer to Love's "Forever Changes." That meaning The Notorious Byrd Brothers is a bold folk record, beautifully layered and textured and most importantly, one can hear the times in which it was recorded in the album.
"Draft Morning" is a good example. Not just the explosions in the background, echoing Vietnam, but the ethos of the song itself. "Today was the day for action / Leave my bed to kill instead / Why should it happen?" The song just floats along, but there is a deep dread throughout it. It sounds like a guy knowingly waking up in his house for the last time. Even if he returns, his life will not be as it is on this day.
The counter-culture anthems continue with "I Wasn't Born To Follow", possible the greatest song in the group's cannon. Again, there is a sweet flow to the song, but it's lyrics and message, despite the nature imagery, have an edge. It's a song about what that guy from "Draft Morning" would do if he skipped out on his draft board meeting.
There are no songs worthy of skipping over here. Every one has something going for it. The Byrds mixing it up nicely, a little folk here, a taste of rural there, and some psych experiments peppered throughout. It's rich with ideas and it is never dull. No, it's not as solid as "Forever Changes", even though "Tribal Gathering" sounds a lot like Love, but the fact that mentioning those two albums in the same sentence says something significant about the album.
CONDITION: The cover the front is clean and crisp M-, the back cover just starting a little harmless ring wear, VG++ no problems = no seam splits, no bends, no writing and has sharp corners, that nice.
The vinyl is all glossy both sides...visually smooth, between EXcellent / M- and plays all smooth and clean M- that nice.
still has the original (first & only printing) insert advising how you can play the stereo Lp on your MONO equipment !
