1969 ORIGINAL CLEAN M- VINYL COLLECTIBLE BLUESROCK CLASSIC!
THE KEEF HARTLEY BAND
BATTLE OF NORTH WEST SIX
\ USA - DERAM RECORDS - DES 18035
1969 original first pressing ((M-)) vinyl in thick gatefold cover on the famed DERAM records label.
Aside from the fact that this is a stunning piece of late '60’s rock by one of the unsung stars of the Woodstock festival the year after this was released and that there is hardly a weak moment in the music and that it sounds almost as fresh today as it did then – this is an album of legendary importance.
The album itself is absolutely classic British Blues and the musicians read like rock royalty: Keef Hartley, who replaced Ringo Starr in his pre-Beatles Liverpool band and was a regular with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Spit James, Mick Weaver, Barbara Thompson, Mick Taylor plus Hartley’s regular band of Miller Anderson, Gary Thain, Henry Lowther and Jim Jewell.
Hartley was bringing his love of big band swing and Blues together with hippie sensibilities to produce a collection of complex, swinging boogie tunes and outright soul lifters.
To hear Mick Taylor – then of John Mayall and about to join the Rolling Stones – playing with Miller Anderson is little short of guitar heaven and Mick Weaver’s Hammond just roils and fills in the back sound with a fat harmony to whatever else is happening: they might never have sounded better than on 'Don’t Be Afraid’. Miller Anderson's vocals are outstanding. Steady rhythm from Hartley and Thain under some nice edgy guitar licks from Spit James and Anderson. Excellent keyboards and backing accents (the flugel's sound great). A combination of Blues, Rock and Jazz swing with emphasis on UK Blues-Rock. If you like the classic BLUESBREAKERS sound, you'll probably love this.
