SCARCE 1969 FIRST PRINTING ~ ELEGANT GRACEFUL PROG/PSYCH
THE ADVANCEMENT
\ USA - PHILIPS RECORDS - 600 328
Original 1969 first pressing vinyl of a dreamy melodic prog/jazz/psych showcase filled with plenty of tastey interludes and rise ups...check the fuzz-guitar jams that highlight this album
Featuring the cream of California pro musicians, including members of Gabor Szabo's band and Bill Plummer's Cosmic Brotherhood), this criminally-overlooked 1969 set fuses modal jazz and psychedelic rock to unforgettable effect. Stuffed with haunting melodies, mellow vibraphone, ripping fuzz guitar and irresistible grooves, it's a lost classic that will appeal to fans of acid rock and psychedelic jazz alike....The emphasis here is on elegance and grace, with superbly played parts and improvisations. The music sound great today, untarnished by time and modernism, still a great example of combining musical genres to achieve a better total.
There’s something here for every taste,’ promised the back cover of this lost 1969 classic. ‘Jazz, rock, country, ethnic… this group speaks each idiom with believability and eloquence. They’re not showing off; they just happen to be unlimited.’ Lou Kabok(bass) and Hal Gordon(percussion) became a major live draw in 1967, playing alongside acts including Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin. The influence of the psychedelic movement soon became manifest in their own playing, and would strongly inform the Advancement.
The Advancement was launched in early 1969 and swiftly recorded their sole album with producer David Kinzie. Combining slow, moody pieces like Juliet and Painful Struggle with funky tunes like Stone Folk and Fall Out (both featuring superb fuzz guitar) and the epic Moorish Mode (boasting one of the finest conga breaks ever recorded), the Lp showcases consummate musicianship throughout, but perhaps fell between two stools upon release in 1969. This album remains a cult classic and is one of the best psychedelic-jazz fusion albums of its time.
