Paranoid is the quintessential Sabbath record. It’s also the most accessible. A riff-fest full of hallucinatory lyrics and trapdoor structures, like a good horror film it’s a descent into dark recesses and has a claustrophobic sense that set the bar very high, indeed, for groups groping for that kind of atmosphere.
"War Pigs" remains one of the great album openers, a creepy epic in which Ozzy hilariously rhymes "generals gathered in their masses" with "just like witches at black masses" and gets away with it, while Iommi soars through a set of positively evil riffs. The title track is a proto-punk classic. "Iron Man" is another of the most glorified songs in the bunch, coming off in phantasy doom and gloom. The drifting bong-smoke of "Planet Caravan" is in keeping with the album's mood and one of those mellow moments that would become a hallmark of the group’s albums and most heavy albums forever after. "Electric Funeral" is a disturbing vision of the sort that groups would spend years trying to outdo. "Hand of Doom" is one of the great unsung Sabbath tracks, a druggy post-psychedelic monster of a song that sums up the album's entire dynamic in its seven surly minutes. "Rat Salad" condenses the group’s early jammy tendencies into a short, effective jammer which features a drum solo—Bill Ward's a great drummer. The closer, "Fairies Wear Boots," brings a bit of creepy whimsy to this doom-laden record and puts paid to the whole thing’s bad-trip feel.
In sum: a bizarre, groundbreaking classic that remains a rock and roll funhouse.
