SCARCE 1970 ORIGINAL ON BIZARRE RECORDS!
The Mothers Of Invention
Weasles Ripped My Flesh
USA - AQUA BIZARRE RECORDS - 2028
Original 1970 first pressing on the old BIZARRE RECORDS label...among the freaked-out psych effect collages are the highlights which include; "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama" and one of the greatest unsung Zappa melodies "OH NO (I Don't Believe It)" which was also covered by the illustrious Fraternity Of Man....
Zappa is too prolific for anyone to really like everything he ever did, but this one is one that really sticks out for me as The One. Describe Zappa as someone with avant garde and jazz credentials who worked with Captain Beefheart, and this is what you'd expect. Describe him as any of the gazillion other things he's been, and you'd get something else.
Weasels pisses around with flipped-out and clashing time signatures and freakier effects and collages of reeds blowing their brains out. It is joyfully disonant and rarely slick or knowingly ironic, and should in that respect appeal to those put off by Zappa's occasionally sarcastic voice. There are no long apostrophes to some audience somewhere to throw their pantieeees either, and again, for this we can be truly thankful.
If you want a modern-day point of reference, take The Mars Volta's Scabdates live album, and halve the length, with a hacksaw if necessary. This is by no means the perfect or best Zappa record, but it's continually interesting in a way that others quite often cease to be after a listen or two.ne
