PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Original 1971 BRITISH first pressing in unique designed gatefold cover containing custom inner gatefold panels to this excellent folk psych album filled with magical self penned tunes containing scattered fuzz guitar and a sound collectors desire ... released a year or so after the famous ASTRAL NAVIGATIONS album that Bill Nelson was a big part of....
The custom designed cover of Bill Nelson’s 1971 Northern Dream, reflects the almost homemade nature of its sound. Written, produced, sung and harmonised by Nelson, with the musical hipster also playing the lion’s share of the instruments, it was recorded on the most basic of equipment and thus enjoys a rawer – dare we say, more honest – sound than one would find on professionally put together singer-songwriter releases of the time. 300 copies of the album were originally pressed, the sessions funded by Nelson’s local record shop in Wakefield England. It took the intervention of legendary underground radio d.j. John Peel – as was so often the case – to bring Northern Dream to a wider audience and set young Bill on a road that would lead successes thereafter. The music on Northern Dream transverses various styles, soaking up the psychedelic, folk, blues and even a smattering of rural rock (‘Sad Feelings’). As the artist himself states, he “wandered the fields of Yorkshire trying to live the ‘peace and love’, post-hippie dream… some sort of psychedelic troubadour or something.”It’s a rough-and-ready pair of mud-splashed moccasins he fits well, as the ten, mostly gentle songs that form Northern Dream – along with a brief preface and coda – drift soothingly from a musical age that, although no longer du jour, lasted well into the 70s – a decade later defined by cynicism and turmoil. Choppy, psychedelic folk guitars reinforce this self-declared hippie lifestyle on the exhilarating ode to Mother Nature’s handiwork, ‘Rejoice’.And it’s Nelson’s guitar that provides the signature for Northern Dream, whether flying off at a tangent with some fancy finger-work at the close of ‘Everybody’s Hero’, or through the reversed (backwards guitar) looping which acts as the midsection on the album’s extended and progressive swansong, ‘Smiles’. Elsewhere, the budgetary restraints are challenged on ‘Love’s A Way’, where the occasional phased vocals, as Nelson later revealed, are achieved with the use of a metal bucket and handheld microphone. The effect may be no ‘Itchycoo Park’ (though that song apparently uses a technique called flanging), but it does the job adequately.As does Northern Dream… more than adequate, in fact. Bill Nelson’s debut is a charming collection of unassuming gems that actually benefits from its economical approach to production, with Nelson using the limited tools at hand to create a full sound, which, at the same time, remains unpretentious and warm.
