SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE...The birth of a legend, and easily one of the heaviest records to hit the mainstream in the late 60s! The album's got a sinister quality that you can hear on the first few notes -- a low-end, rumbling approach that brings in a lot more fuzzy bass than other groups of the time had ever thought to use -- all topped with some of the most wickedly edgey guitar put on record to date, and undercut by drums that stand out throught the tracks! But it's the basslines & Blackmore's vibrato bar guitar that set the tone for most of the tunes in the set -- creating a bottom-heavy groove that would be copped many times in years to come, and which still sounds tremendously fresh here in the RARE UK Parlophone pressing. Titles include "Mandrake Root", "I'm So Glad", "One More Rainy Day", "Help", "Love Help Me", "And The Address", and "Hey Joe".
"Shades Of Deep Purple" is a mix of hard rock and early prog rock, with a little popsike and psychedelia tossed in for good measure. The band contained 2 pre-WARHORSE members (Simper & Evans) and singer Rod Evans went on to front Captain Beyond. The first two songs, "And the Address" and the hit "Hush", definitely fall into the hard rock category. They could be seen as an attempt to take what the Spencer Davis Group had been doing, and do with it what Led Zeppelin were about to do with the Yardbirds -- crank it up a notch, make it heavier. The early progressive appears at the start of the next cut, "One More Rainy Day", with a baroque-sounding organ figure reminiscent of what Matthew Fisher was doing in Procol Harum. The rest of the song is poprock. It's followed by an passage interlude that is pure progressive, sounding like an excerpt from an early Genesis track, which segues into a nice cover of "I'm So Glad" that is not terribly different from Cream's original. "Mandrake Root" is the album's nod to psychedelia; next comes a slow, dirge-like version of "Help!" that is similar to the kind of thing that Vanilla Fudge were doing, followed by the not-too-memorable "Love Help Me"; the album closes with a cover of "Hey Joe" that isn't too different from Hendrix's well-known version.
