BILLIE HOLIDAY * Solitude * ?"Songs By Billie Holiday“, da weiß Jeder: geschmeidige Improvisationen einer spröden, labilen, unsteten Stimme sind zu hören. Keine Sekunde – gleichgültig wie der Titel heißt oder wann er aufgenommen wurde – vergisst man das Schicksal der Lady Day. Wohl keine offenbart sich und ihr gesamtes Leben so wie Billie Holiday in ihren Songs.
Anfang der 50iger Jahre schickte Norman Granz seine JATP-Konzerte mit Oscar Peterson, dessen Rhythmusgruppe und den Solisten Charlie Shavers und Flip Philips um die Welt. Aber der Star war die Frau mit der Gardenie im Haar, die sich durch die Standards von "East Of The Sun" bis "Tenderly kämpfte", immer am Rande des stimmlichen und körperlichen Absturzes. Die Jazzfans, die die Konzerte in Europa 1954 und 1956 erlebt haben, waren Ohren- und Augenzeugen bei dem Verfall einer großen Persönlichkeit und ihrer Stimme. Heute müssen wir uns auf die Konserve, im besten Falle auf die LP, beschränken, wenn wir die Größe dieser Künstlerin begreifen wollen.

Not for a single second, no matter which number, or recording date, can you forget the fate of Lady Day. Probably no one else ever revealed their innermost feelings and whole life as Billie Holiday did in her songs.
At the beginning of the Fifties, Norman Granz sent his JATP concerts with Oscar Peterson, his rhythm group and the soloists Charlie Shavers and Flip Philips around the world. But the real star was the lady with the gardenia in her hair, who battled her way through such evergreens such as "East Of The Sun" and "Tenderly", and who was always on the verge of a vocal and physical breakdown. Those jazz fans who attended her European concerts in 1954 and 1956 were eye- and ear witnesses of the deterioration of a great personality and her unique voice. Today we must rely on recordings, LPs at best, if we want to comprehend this artist’s greatness.
