CLYDE McPHATTER W/ BILLY WARD & HIS DOMINOES [King 559]
This is one of the most amazing 50s albums ever made. It has a lot of the famous singles -- see the photo for a full track listing.
Billy Ward formed the group that became The Dominoes in the late '40s, with Clyde McPhatter one of the original members. They made one of the most controversial singles of the era "Sixty Minute Man", which became one of the first rock and roll hits. The group toured widely, building up a reputation as one of the top R&B acts of the era and an audience which crossed racial divides. However, Ward's strict disciplinarian approach and failure to properly pay the singers caused internal problems. Clyde McPhatter was being paid barely enough to live on, and often found himself billed as "Clyde Ward" to fool fans into thinking he was Billy Ward's brother.
They had a string of hits but in early 1953 McPhatter decided to leave, and soon formed a new group, The Drifters. (His replacement in the Dominoes was Jackie Wilson, who had sung with the group on tour.)
This album was released in 1956. According to a discography web site, this disc - with the pink cover - was released in the 1960s. If so, it was before 1963 - the address on the back cover doesn't have a zip code.
The record is visually in NEAR MINT-MINT condition. There are no scratches, marks or flaws. It looks like it just came off the press. The labels are flawless with no spindle marks. [I don't have a turntable set up so I can't tell you the audio condition, but it was a new record when I bought it and it was very carefully looked after.] I have stored the disc in a sleeve with plastic inner bag to protect it.
The cover is in GOOD - VERY GOOD condition. There is a scratch on the front cover. The top edge has a split from the front edge back about 2.5 inches long. Otherwise there are no tears, bends or other marks.
