There isn't much of trad folk structures, yet the ancient, rural atmosphere seems to preserve a near-pagan core from the old folk music. Arabic and African sounds are integrated into the English music, like remembrances of travels made long ago. Peaking with the dazzling Renaissance-like beauty of 'Martha & Mary', the songwriting is varied but impressive, with outstanding contributions from all three members. Many songs build on religious material, but seem to interpret this material as dealing with human love; conversely the songs that deal with rural folk imagery and relationships seem loaded with religious feeling. Approaching us from three directions at once, Moyshe McStiff uncovers a common meeting ground for human love, religious belief and pastoral mysticism.
