Label/Format: Vertigo with matt, smooth surfaces. This the considerably rarer first issue swirl format with the large spiral on side one. Most that surface have the side two design on both sides e.g. no full spiral on side one. The album per se is not one of the rarer Vertigo titles without the full Spiral, but the very first copies are much, much harder and elusive.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few, very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side two with more white, still very clean with barely any grubbiness.

Cat Number: 6360017.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 139 grams. A very good solid weight.

Brief Info: The third UK Colosseum album that features quite a differing band line-up to the upheavals at the time of recording. This is a powerful jazz-rock set Of special interest to me is the inclusion of John Hiseman’s wife Barbara Thompson, I saw this woman live several times playing with her Paraphernalia band in Colchester, and she was magificent. This album sold reasonably well, but only initial pressings included (for some reason) the trademark full Swirl logo on side one. When quickly repressed, it had disappeared with the standard side two design on BOTH sides. Thus finding this album with the full swirl is very difficult. Indeed in my 13+ years of selling on Ebay, this is the very first one I have ever seen or had to offer. A very impresisve copy it is too, so another chance for Colosseum and Vertigo collectors to fill another difficult gap in their collection.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England and includes the swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Yes another challenging Vertigo cover with gold coloured ink that wears just as badly as silver. Often this rubs badly and looks unpleasant, it is highly receiving of handling or fingermarks, that are near impossible to avoid unless untouched. Only small percentages of owners kept covers in protective sleeves this early, and minor dulling to surfaces this colour is practically the norm. Overall, this front has little rubbing, any gentle traces near the edges and hardly any creasing either. A few tiny surface marks and handling traces seen more under angled light, but this one of the better cover front I have seen for this difficult sleeve.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same again, the lack of ring wear a significant plus. The main issue, is a medium sized price sticker on the back which appears to originate from Denmark with a Kr 45.50 price as well as another above it. This sticker appears a little aged and clearly it has been there for some considerable time. So whether this was sold either new via import and later second-hand in Denmark, I have no idea. I am certain with considerable care, this sticker could be removed, but for sure, I am not going to risk it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The odd tiny mark or equally faint small surface crease. Any rubbing to the immensely difficult gold ink is minimal, that quite unusual, but most welcome of course. There is just one ‘x’ in pen next to the 1. for the first track.

Top Edges: Only a little light very patchy rubbing on the back, hardly anything on the front, both straight.

Bottom Edges: Moderate and consistent rubbing to both.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a proper tucked and folded edge that has barely any wear at all being neat and straight. The thin entrance edges of the back are mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring quite light and few and light as seen viewed end-on. Both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. Just a couple of small surface chips and hardly any rubbing at all, even to the vulnerable fold hinges. The spine does have text, but quite why I am not sure, because it is almost impossible to see let alone read. Black ink on a dark mottle black and gold spine, it gets simply lost. So check it’s presence was done with a magnifying glass. This revealed firstly, there is text present, and then most of it still there with just a little eroded near the end of the title. But again, you can hardly make text out on this particular design anyway, it is simply lost within the colour of the spine ink.

Corners: Quite light tip rubs on all bar the bottom right which are more moderate+. So most retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this somewhat uncompromising early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. With most of any wear on the bottom storage edges (as usual), this attractive and only gently aged cover should please many collectors, but not the highly discerning as the grade suggests.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this one date-coded 1070 (October 1970). One corner crease, two neat window circles and the polylining very clear with minimal crinkle. Only very gently darkened with age and no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A splendid visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks mainly very light, fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. The odd thicker hairline seen, but most are whispy traces even finer than that, there are no penetrating scratches and sound quality remains very high. Visually a super record that should please many collectors, but not those wanting ‘as new’, should a copy of this first issue still exist as such.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality jazz-prog-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Powerful vocals from Farlowe and wonderful reed blowing and percussion from the Hisemans. I rate Thompson as one of the finest jazz-rock saxophones players of the modern era and her husband John Hiseman a supreme drummer. His solos live were mind-blowing. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this ultimate first pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this rare full-spiral label record. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
