In 1961 John Coltrane stepped into Impulse! Records with the sort of audacity that rearranges the furniture of jazz history. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio, this session swells his quartet into a brass-laden phalanx guided by arranger Cal Massey, with Eric Dolphy and McCoy Tyner threading strange harmonic architecture through the ensemble. 'Africa' advances with ceremonial gravity, horns stacked in dense, burnished columns while Coltrane's tenor pushes through the mass like a torch through fog. 'Greensleeves' arrives almost stately by comparison, its modal frame opening wide for slow, searching lines. The brief 'Blues Minor' closes the set with a darker pulse and the rhythm section simmering beneath Coltrane's restless improvisation.
