Description
They were doing something right at the Columbia pressing plant when they made this one in 1960--it's really unbelievable! This is Shostakovich's Cello Concerto in, probably, the definitive performance. The soloist was the then relatively unknown Rostropovich, with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy. Dramatic, intense and lyrical performance. The excellent stereo sound is about the best Columbia ever achieved, and ranks with the best on ANY label.
This is stereo Columbia MS 6124, on the 6-eye label.
This record was carefully auditioned with a Goldring 1042 cartridge, Music Hall TT, Densen amplification and Epos speakers. The thick disc looks glossy and superb, essentially perfect, and plays perfectly: NM. Excellent, close-up sound, with great bass and a wide dynamic range. The surfaces are astonishingly quiet--and this is a Columbia! Uncanny, and this is FAR better and more vivid than the Dutch Philips hi-fi stereo AY counterpart.
The jacket has some minor wear--VG+. I've added a Nagaoka inner sleeve to the originals.
This is the ultimate collector's copy of this indispensible cello record--you won't find better.
