COLUMBIA Set 33CX 1499 & 33CX1500 - Dinu LIPATTI  His Last Recital

This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.

Two lovely copies of this historic and much sought after record set of Dinu Lipatti’s last concert at the Besancon Festival in 1950. The recording dates from 1957.

RECORD GRADING

EXCELLENT

Both records in this set are in excellent condition. All four sides are very clean and positively gleam. The labels, on which there are no spindle marks, are the original Columbia Blue and Gold.

The Matrix numbers are:

There are hardly any visible marks on any of the 4 sides, just a very occasional hairline or sleeve rubbing. The records do look as if they have hardly ever been played.

I have listened carefully to both records and can only report there is a little surface noise apparent at times on all four sides and there are some occasional light ticks. Given the visual condition of these records, I suspect the cause to be dust.

There are only two points at which I heard anything repetitive throughout my listening. On CX1499, on Side 2 after about 7 minutes, there are 4 noticeable light clicks and midway through the final band on this side there are 2 light clicks. There is a tiny speck visible at about 12 o’clock in the middle of this band which may be the cause.

The sound quality throughout all four sides is excellent.

COVER GRADING

EXCELLENT

There is no damage to either cover. The corners are only slightly rubbed and the opening edges a little soiled where the laminate has not been applied right up to the edge of the card. All four surfaces are clean.

On the 33CX1500 cover there are some crease marks on the front, the record ring is just visible and there is one small spot on the back.

Both the lined ‘Important’ inner sleeves are clean, undamaged and only lightly creased
