Background -
The early Turquoise/Silver label Columbia SAX stereo series of LPs are some of the rarest and most valuable records on the planet. As such, they are truly “Holy Grail” items for serious classical music collectors. This is one such example, made in the UK, issued in stereo from 1959 in outstanding collectors grade condition throughout - jacket and vinyl are near mint!The folks at EMI/Columbia in the 1950s-60s must've really loved Dvorak's New World Symphony or realized its selling potential to the music-buying world, because they decided to record it at least 4 different times with four different conductors on the British Columbia alone, not to mention Rudolf Kempe's recording in the EMI ASD series. This was the first of the four, the others being with Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Phiharmonia, Carlo Maria Giulini with the Phiharmonia, and lastly with Otto Klemperer with the New Philharmonia. I wonder how the musicians of the Philharmonia felt about recording this four times. Karajan and the Berliners would go on to record the New World a few more times for Deutsche Grammophon. We all know there is no shortage of recordings for this staple of the classical music repertoire. In any case, this is a pretty decent early stereo recording, with a good all-out performance (my only qualm is the opening measures of the 3rd movement, which I felt were a little wobbly). The second movement is given a very lyrical treatment, the third and fourth movements proceed at good tempos. Again, as I have found to be typical on these early EMI/Columbia recordings, you feel like you're sitting some rows back in the recording hall, but that way you can also take in the acoustics of the hall. Dynamic range is pretty good, with just a little loss of clarity in the very loud passages. This could be my equipment. I'd describe the recording as being "bright”. - milestomozart

CONDITION Details:
The LP JACKET is in near mint minus condition! The jacket has NO seam splits or crushed corners. The corners and seams are solid with just some very light shelf wear. The jacket has flipped over or "clam shell" seams at the top, spine and bottom and the front is covered in clear plastic, otherwise known as "CLARI-FOIL". The colors on the jacket are sharp and clean - just a beautiful copy!
The LP is in near mint minus condition. We found that the vinyl looked superb on this vintage LP! There may be some very light marks on the vinyl (spider marks, nothing serious) and the LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen. It does have a bit of dust and perhaps a finger print or two on the vinyl so it should be cleaned before playing for best results. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels.A Short Note About LP GRADING -
- Mint = Only used for sealed items.
- Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
- Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
- Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
- Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.
For best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.
The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
