Background -
The early Turquoise/Silver label Columbia SAX stereo series of LPs are some of the rarest and most valuable records on the planet. As such, they are truly “Holy Grail” items for serious classical music collectors. This is one such example, made in the UK, issued in stereo from 1961 in outstanding collectors grade condition throughout - jacket and vinyl are near mint!Igor Oistrakh is one of the more important violinists to emerge from the mid-20th century USSR, despite being largely overshadowed by his famous father, violinist David Oistrakh. Igor often partnered his father in duo repertory ranging from J.S. Bach and Mozart to Prokofiev and Ysaÿe. But the younger Oistrakh also struck out his own path as a soloist and recitalist in a broad range of repertory by J.S. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bruch, Khrennikov, and others. Like his father he also played the viola and conducted. In addition, Igor Oistrakh has been active as a teacher for most of his career and has made numerous recordings, available from EMI, Berlin Classics, DG, and Melodiya.
Igor Oistrakh was born in Odessa, Ukraine, on April 27, 1931. His father was his first teacher, but during the early war years he abandoned studies on violin. Igor resumed studies in 1943, with Pyotr Stolyarsky, and later enrolled at Moscow's Central Music School.
From 1947, Igor Oistrakh regularly began appearing in duo concerts with his father. Igor made his official debut as soloist in 1948, and the following year won the Budapest-based World Festival of Youth and Students Violin Competition. That same year Oistrakh enrolled at the Moscow Conservatory, remaining until 1955.
Oistrakh was busy concertizing during his student years, even taking time in 1952 to win the International Wieniawski Competition in Poznan, Poland. In 1958 he joined the faculty at the Moscow Conservatory, while continuing to steadily build a successful career in chamber, solo and recital performance. From 1968, he began conducting. Though his father died in 1974, Igor Oistrakh continued making duo appearances with his wife Natalia Zertsalova, a talented pianist. Together the two would make distinguished recordings on the Melodiya label of all the Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano, as well as works by J.S. Bach, Prokofiev, and many others.
In 1996 Oistrakh accepted the post of professor of violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. In the new century Oistrakh has remained active as a performer, often appearing with his wife, as well as his son, Valeri, who is also a talented violinist. Among Igor Oistrakh's more acclaimed recordings is the Mozart Sinfonia concertante and other works, on the Doron label (2001). Here, partnered with his son Valeri, Igor conducts the orchestra and also plays the viola in the featured work and in two chamber pieces. - Robert Cummings
This is one of the rarest Columbia SAX's and the only one starring Igor Oistrakh, the son of the legendary David Oistrakh. All the Oistrakh recordings on British Columbia fetch high prices on eBay and the classical dealer's market. This one is a charm to listen to. I love the Brahms violin sonatas, and Igor Oistrakh's performances are both warm and dramatic. Like his father, he plays with a beautiful, singing tone. I get the impression that the recording must have been made in a small studio, since my ears pick up very little reverberation or resonance (update 8/4/15: I'd now call this dry). It gives the listener the overall sense that you are intimately witnessing a private recital with these two great performers.

CONDITION Details:
The LP JACKET is in near mint minus condition! The jacket has NO seam splits or crushed corners. The corners and seams are solid with just some very light shelf wear. The jacket has flipped over seams at the top, spine and bottom and the front of the jacket is covered in clear plastic, otherwise known as "CLARI-FOIL". There is a name written in pen (small) on the back of the jacket. The colors on the jacket are sharp and clean - just a beautiful copy!
The LP is in near mint minus condition. We found that the vinyl looked superb on this vintage LP! There are some very light marks on the vinyl (spider marks, nothing serious) and the LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen. This item comes with the original inner sleeve. The vinyl may have a bit of dust and perhaps a finger print or two on the vinyl so it should be cleaned before playing for best results. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels.A Short Note About LP GRADING -
- Mint = Only used for sealed items.
- Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
- Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
- Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
- Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.
For best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.
The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
