HERE is forgotten (but good!) pop singer M. J. O'CONNELL, with a remarkable song from 1916: "COME OUT OF THE KITCHEN, MARY ANN." It's about a pretty scullery maid, who dreams of movie stardom while she cooks and washes dishes! It's very likely the first song ever written about Hollywood and its celebrities*:
“Why waste your time cooking Irish stew?
When MARY PICKFORD and THEDA BARA will step aside for you?!
How would you like to be shown with CHARLIE CHAPLIN?
Your picture pasted on each garbage can?
Easy money! Nothing to do!
Just let him kick you black and blue!
Come out of the kitchen, Mary daaaaaar - ling!”
The other side, "WHEN RAGTIME RUFUS RAGS THE HUMORESQUE," is yet another song about a Black bandleader who "rags" only the classics, in this case, Antonin Dvorak's much-put-upon little tune.
This original 1916 "Bat Wing" Victor 18221 is in glorious E condition. No issues, except for a tight, inaudible, nearly invisible hair crack, stabilized at the rim.
(*n.b.: The Hollywood "Star" system had begun as recently as 1910, when FLORENCE LAWRENCE, hitherto known only as "The Biograph Girl," held out against her studio for more money and name billing. The producers' nightmare of temperamental, highly-paid stars had commenced!).
