Description

Baron Elmo Enterprises proudly presents a stunning lp of musical mastery that will blow your mind a dozen times over, courtesy of improvisers par excellence Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Tristan Honsinger and Maarten van Regteren Altena… each a master musician in his own right, here merging their powers as COMPANY: Company 1, a UK import released in 1977 by the sacred Incus label, now long out of print. This lp was the first of a series of recordings documenting the extraordinary sounds of Company Week, a now-defunct annual event (organized by the late Derek Bailey) that brought together a constantly shifting group of musicians for a few days of improvising and sound exploration. In the act of discarding structure for complete musical freedom, the players assembled for the occasion often achieved explosive and intoxicating results. From 1976 to 1991, Incus Records released some of the finest Company groupings on CD and lp, Company 1 kicking off the series with a resounding bang. And what a glorious ensemble for such an occasion, teaming up four mighty improvisors to kick out their respective jams: Derek Bailey (electric and acoustic guitar), Evan Parker (soprano and tenor saxophone), Tristan Honsinger (cello), and Maarten Altena (bass). None of the four lengthy pieces that make up this lp feature all the players performing together… rather, each piece features one of the possible trio combinations from a pool of four musicians, so each player sits out for one track. This makes each part of this quartet of performances distinctively different from the others… but no matter which lineup you hear, the results are nothing short of electrifying. Let these intrepid musical travellers take you on a journey to the center of the mind not dreamt of in Ted Nugent's philosophy. This lp has been out of print for many years, and none of these performances has yet made it to CD. Both the record and cover show slight wear, but this lp looks great and plays beautifully.
