1974 Deram XDEF-106, original issue/pressing (Canada) Stereo

 

Following the premature death of Frank Dervieux (one of Quebec's founding fathers of progressive rock ...who released the groundbreaking "Dimension M"),  his bandmates re-christened themselves Contraction, and continued in the same direction........recording two progressive gems.

 

"La Bourse Ou La Vie" , their second (and last) release was such a groundbreaking and influential recording that it's generally credited for helping to kick off the golden era of Quebec prog and influencing groups like Harmonium, Maneige, Sloche and Opus 5.

 

Truly unique Quebec-flavoured prog, with hints of King Crimson and Yes.     Great guitar breaks, jazzy haunting vocals and synths and nice flute-bass-drum interplay.     Several highlights,  especially the 18 minute epic title-track.

Yves Laferriere (bass),  Robert Lachapelle (piano, organ, synthesizers),  Christiane Robichaud (flute & vocals),  Robert Stanley (guitars),  Richard Perrotte and Denis Farmer on drums, and with Jimmy Tanaka (un-credited) contributing with some awesome percussion.
