crazy consistent, subtly dissonant thrash with some serious hooks here and there (the gang chorus to "silent fall" would fit on an NYCHC record!). works with some of those dense, Voivod-y cluster chords in a way that's more recognizable as post-Reign in Blood thrash than the 'vod but ends up being just as disorienting and punishing thanks to its overwhelming--intermittently excessive--virtuosity and, uh, shreddiness. but it's tempered with enough sheer (relative) weirdness to be too wanky. and the subtle influence from their former paymasters is nice--it's limited to things like the insistent chorus of "masked jackal", which descends in an oddly un-metal way that's redolent of Frost's truly original grinding riffs, more headscratching than headbanging, or the unstable, low-mid-tempo double bass than that pops up here and there.
overall a near-masterpiece that's very well-realized and internally diverse.
