« …Alain Mion, composer, arranger & master of keyboards has been combining swing & energy for 30 years. In 1966, at the age of 19 he performed at the legendary Blue Note. His fellow musicians included Hank Mobley, Hal Singer, Richard Raux and Philly Joe Jones. In 1974, Mion formed the mythical band Cortex who recorded several LP’s, including the legendary « Troupeau Bleu ». They toured Europe and performed on many radio and televison shows before the band splited at the beginning of the eighties. Troupeau Bleu, recorded in 2 days in july 1975, is a real musical U.F.O, an unclassifiable record, a mixing of thousand flavours, the kind of records you will discover listening after listenning… » from the original CD liner notes.

Troupeau Bleu est une œuvre majeure de jazz funk que Cortex enregistra en 2 jours de juillet 1975 au studio Damiens à Boulogne.

Composé intégralement par Alain Mion, fondateur du groupe, cet album est un concentré des différentes influences de ce pianiste de jazz surdoué.

Le disque s’ouvre sur La Rue, pur morceau de jazz funk embelli par les performances vocales de Mireille Dalbray, la chanteuse du groupe au timbre si particulier. Suit une ré-interprétation jazzy de Colchiques Dans Les Prés assez anecdotique et L’Enfant Samba, un titre exotique au tempo chaloupé.

Le disque prend ensuite des allures pop avec Troupeau Bleu, qui est avec Mary et Jeff, le titre phare de l’album : on est littéralement envoûté par Mireille Dalbray dont la voix reste gravée en mémoire après la première écoute du refrain.

Mary et Jeff est l’autre perle de l’album. En 2’40, tout est dit : une introduction, deux thèmes et une envolée synthétique en guise de break. Rien à ajouter de plus, l’affaire est emballée.
C’est d’ailleurs cela qui détache Alain Mion du peloton de tête des virtuoses du jazz funk : il sait aller à l’essentiel sans jamais trop en faire, privilégiant ainsi l’interprétation par rapport à la démonstration.

Au niveau sonore, les prises sont d’une telle qualité qu’on a du mal à croire qu’elles datent d’il y a 33 ans. L’ensemble dégage une chaleur qui creuse encore l’écart avec les productions habituellement très fades du genre.

Du point de vue des ventes, le disque a été un flop avec un peu moins de 7000 exemplaires vendus à l’époque de sa sortie.
