I've been avoiding this album for years. The artwork looked not much appetizing and the title suggested your run-of-the-mill weird psychedelic stuff that was really galore back in the 70s. God, how wrong I was!

When Viva Boma kicks in, for a moment you will not likely believe it was recorded in 1976, because it opens with a synth part that sounds like it came straight from the 80s! No wonder the keyboardist and main writer Marc Hollander, whose parts always sound exceptionally fresh here, had founded the pioneering avant-prog outfit Aksak Maboul just one year later.

But really the best thing about Cos is the vocals. I can swear, Pascale Son is the single best singer in the whole Canterbury scene. Her sweet gentle voice is somewhat reminiscent of Elizabeth Fraser and, given the soft dreamy qualities of the music, it all begins to sound like a strange jazzy predecessor to Cocteau Twins.

The melodies here are very accessible and deeply rooted in pop, but since this is still a Canterbury scene release, the jazz basis is pretty much pronounced in the instrumentation. Viva Boma is weird and freaky, but in its very own – gentle and alluring – way. With its psychedelic naïveté and all the innovation and experimentation, this album becomes a bridge between the past the future.
