Apparently Basie was impressed by Alan Copeland's work as choral director of the "Red Skelton Show" and approached him to do this album. He was honoured of course and said 'yes'. The collaboration was quite successful as expected. Alan conducted and did all the arrangements. For Basie purists this wasn't seen as one of maestro's high points. But even Basie was a businessman and had to make a buck. On some tracks the rhythm section and voices are aided by some of the Basie sidemen. This album, in fact, contains the first fruits of Roy Eldridge's new association with the Count. His muted horn is a heard on "Until I met You", a number written by Freddie Green, whose guitar is a driving force on every track. There are also solos and obbligati by Lockjaw Davis, Al Grey and Roy on "One For My Baby" and "Call Me".

(b)          The record is  apparently  pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP  (A PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear in one small area not covered by the shrink wrap (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the spine (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams
