COUNT FIVE  PSYCHOTIC REACTION 1st RELEASE STEREO DSS-5001 - IN SHRINKRAP - IMMACULATE

This LP has been in my collection for over 40 years. It has never been played (I have a second one for listening to) other than preparing for this sale. It is in near-mint condition. Plays perfectly. The jacket is near perfect. No ringwear. All edges and corners perfect. It has a cut-out drilled hole, covered by the yellow dot. The roughly ¼ in. size of the actual hole can be seen in pics of the inner sleeve (blank white and also perfectly intact except for fading and the hole).

You will not find a cleaner version of this iconic 1966 garage/psychedelic rock classic LP.

The hit “Psychotic Reaction” is unquestionably one of the most celebrated examples of mid-sixties rock music that came out on the cusp of the transition from AM pop radio to the “heavy, underground” sound about to be unleashed on radio audiences everywhere on the FM band, forever changing popular music in the U.S.

“Fuzz tone” lead guitar was new at the time. The only hit tune that compares in this genre that comes to mind is the Amboy Dukes’ (Ted Nugent) “Journey to the Center of the Mind” and the aptly titled “Shapes of Things to Come,” by the seminal band whose trio of guitarists almost single-handedly launched the genre, the Yardbirds. The fuzz-tone guitar is prevalent on most of the tunes. Pretty cool!

From the track list one can safely infer that these boys from San Jose were fans of The Who. Several of the tunes are catchy, but the title track, of course, is the meat and potatoes.

Think of it. At this time, the plethora of psychedelic bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane were just negotiating their first record contracts in San Francisco.

1966 was the year of transition for rock music. What a time to be alive!
