50th Anniversary of The Band You Don’t Know – Coven - Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls:
It’s now 50 years since the creation of heavy metal. At least, the first album to be credited as the first heavy metal album. Who is this band? Coven, of course! Who?! Well, let me introduce you… Coven was a psychedelic rock band featuring members Jinx Dawson, Greg ‘Oz’ Osbourne, Jim Donlinger, Jim Nyeholt, John Hobbs, Rick Durrett, Alan Estes, and Steve Ross from Chicago, US, releasing their debut album, Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls in 1969. A symbol for the counterculture at the time, they were part of the underground rock community, mostly because whilst many metal bands still do sing about occultist imagery, Coven was IN the occult! There’s a reason why there is a 13-minute track on the album called “Satanic Mass” – it’s literally a Satanic Mass recorded on the album! Supposedly the first of its kind to be recorded ever, even if you’re not a Satanist yourself, it’s an interesting piece of history that has thankfully been preserved to this day. But if you’d rather not hear it, it is the final track on the album, so easily skippable. The rest of the tracks, however, should NEVER be skipped! In all seriousness, in all the listening I have done for work and in my own time, this album has completely overhauled my favourite albums of all time list because this had to squeeze in near the top spots! Let’s go through them chronologically, starting with “Black Sabbath”…no, I am not joking about that title! It’s ethereal, mystical, and a perfect way to start the album. It’s a soft welcome into this adventure. Jinx has one of the best voices I’ve heard in a long time, and she truly takes command in this album. All power is with her, and we as the listener are at her beck and call. As she is the original “Queen of the Goths”, she is one of the best frontwomen in rock and metal history, and someone who should seriously garner more attention! The second song, “White Witch of Rose Hall”, is about an actual legend in Jamaica, and damn those rhythms! It’s certainly a driving song – that piano riff is awesome and fantastically done. “Coven at Charing Cross”, again, plays of that fantastic storytelling that the band do so well. It does give some Rainbow vibes with how in-depth their lyrics can go with their mystical storytelling and how beautifully crafted it is. It certainly shows that this band put a lot of thought and time into delivering an innovative and provocative musical journey. If you read my review of Halestorm’s Vicious, I praised it for how it gave off the attitude of not caring what people say about the band – I’d say that this album and Coven were the original group to say “screw society, women can be awesome and we’ll do what we want in our music”. This is definitely evident in the song, “Wicked Woman”, which is an absolute jam! To me, this is where Jinx shines her best as a vocalist – it’s some of the best early heavy metal you will hear. Overall, Coven is one of the best metal bands to have ever existed, and it’s sad that they were so ahead of their time that they were missed out of the metal praise. The possible reason however that people might never have heard of Coven is that unfortunately, the counterculture was connected to the Manson Murders so the record label took the album off the circuit.Der versicherte Versand ist kostenlos in Deutschland.
