most of mine and friends demos were picked up at gigs in Ipswich and Norwich circa 1992. also went to Cannibal corpse in 1991 were cradle opened (london marquee which is sadly missed!) and the day of death festival headlined by my dying bride in december 1992. saw cradle 12 times between 1991 and 1995.

The British black metal band Cradle Of Filth was originally formed in Suffolk County in 1991 by Dani Filth (vocals), Paul Ryan (guitars), Jon Richard (bass) and Darren J. White (drums). At first they played death metal but after several demo recordings they changed their style to black metal. After the demo "Invoking The Unclean" the band recruited a second guitarist named Robin Eaglestone. After two more demos ("The Black Goddess Rises" and "Orgiastic Pleasures") Richard and White left the band. In came Paul Allender (guitars), Paul's brother Benjamin Ryan (keyboards) and Nicholas Barker (drums). Eaglestone now changed the guitar for a bass.
In 1993 the band recorded their debut album "The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh" together with now well-known producer Mags. This album contained a bonus track called "Imperium Tenebraum" which was written by Frater Nihil, head priest of the Order of the Absu, an offshoot of the Church of Satan, and founder of Cacophonous Records. Since the band never received any money for this album they were not very happy about the way Cacophonous was handling things and therefore decided to search for a new label. The album also featured guest vocals from Andrea Meyer who would later on form Aghast and Hagalaz Runedance as well as marry Samoth from the Norwegian black metal band Emperor. The following year both Ryan brothers and Paul Allender left the band as the album was released as the first release on the newly founded label Cacophonous Records. For a short while a man named Tishi Mehta played guitars with the band before being replaced by the American Bryan Hipp. New recruits were also found in Stuart Anstis (guitars) and Damien Gregory (keyboards). In 1995 Hipp left again due to illness.
In late 1995 / early 1996 Cradle Of Filth recorded their mini album "Vempire (Or Dark Faerytales In Phallustein)", once again together with Mags. They were now joined by a studio guitarist going by the name of Jared Demeter. [Note that, although Cradle of Filth denies it, it is said that Jared Demeter is actually Stuart Anstis. They only used the Jared story to keep the band a six-piece despite their being only 5 people in the band.] This album was the first to feature female vocalist Sarah Jezebel Deva (born Sarah Jane Ferridge) who would work with the band from now on, both in the studio and live. The band toured with session guitarist Barry Savage before finding a permanent guitarist in Gian Pyres (born John Piras).
In 1996 the band also recorded their second full-length album "Dusk And Her Embrace" with producer Kit Woolven. In 1997 Damien Gregory was replaced with Les "Lector" Smith and the following year their concept album "Cruelty And The Beast" was released, production this time handled by Jan Peter Genkel. In 1999 there were new line-up changes as Nick Barker left (later on to join Norwegian black metal band Dimmu Borgir). For a short time Dave Hirschheimer handled drum duties before leaving to form Obsidian, a band that Dani Filth would later lend his voice to. A permanent drummer was found in the Swedish citizen and former At The Gates skinbasher Adrian Erlandsson. In came William A. "Was" Sarginson on keyboards as well. Towards the end of the year Stuart Anstis was fired and both Gian Pyres and Paul Allender returned to the fold. In 1999 a new mini album called "From The Cradle To Enslave" was also released.
In 2000 former My Dying Bride violinist / keyboard player Martin Powell joined the band and later that year they entered the studio once more to record "Midian" together with producer John Fryer. In 2001 the compilation album "Bitter Suites To Succubi" was released, production this time handled by Doug Cook. The album featured a guest appearance from the Finnish string quartet Apocalyptica who had made themselves famous for playing Metallica songs on classical string instruments. Following its release long-time member Robin Eaglestone left the band who were helped out by former Anathema bassist Dave Pybus on tour.
In 2002 a new compilation album called "Lovecraft & Witch Hearts" was released by Music For Nations. Gian Pyres now left the band for good and later that year it was time for the release of a live album called "Live Bait For The Dead". Cradle Of Filth secured a major label deal with Sony Music and towards the end of the year the band recorded their new album "Damnation And A Day" together with producer Doug Cook where they are joined by the Budapest Film Orchestra and Budapest Film Choir. The album was released in 2003 and entered the charts worldwide.
Comment: In December 1997 it was reported that ex-Brutality guitarist Jeff Acres had joined the band but I do not know if that is correct or for how long he played with them.
