Even before "Fire" presented the Crazy World of Arthur Brown with the most unpredictable chart-topper in rock history, the band itself stood out from the psychedelic underground like an antelope in a sea of salami. Brown himself was blessed with one of the fullest voices in rock, capable of shifting in seconds from satanic whisper to blood-chilling scream, while his live repertoire included jazz, lengthy improvisations, and even four- or five-minute comedy skits, all set to a thunderous soundtrack of organ and drums and the mental imagery of a night in Hades. Two period views of the Crazy World sum them up. From journalist Charles Fox: "...there is a sinister element...one which recalls the smell of seaweed and the rattle of spades and pails. For somehow Arthur Brown contrives to be both the malevolent Punch and -- in drag, with grotesque wig and flowered gown -- a psychedelic Judy"; and from author Nik Cohn: "...he was one long gangling skinny streak, complete with haystack black hair and great staring eyes and an elephant's nose. And when he came on, he was wearing Sun God robes, a science fiction mask, and his head was on fire." Got that? "His head was on fire." Not his hat, not even his hair. His head. And though it eventually transpired that, actually, it was his hat (and occasionally, inadvertently, his hair as well) still the effect -- as Fox continued -- was "disconcerting, even faintly perverse." The same can be said for the band's debut album. Side one is itself consumed by the flames, the so-called "Fire Suite" (actually entitled "Tales from the Neurotic Nights of Hieronymous Anonymous"), a five-part smorgasbord that is part Biblical horror, part bad trip. Themes recur, nightmares return, and Brown himself remains the most dementedly devilish ringmaster ever to lure the kiddies into his circus. You cannot even begin to imagine the fuss that would erupt today, were someone to try the same stunts...imagine switching on MTV to be greeted by a blazing, painted monster insisting "I am the God of Hell Fire." And you thought Prodigy's "Firestarter" was inflammatory. Side two of the album is less intense, concentrating on the R&B and soul-themed material that was the band's live set in the days before "Fire." "Spontaneous Apple Creation" toys with psychedelia somewhat, but largely fails to entrance; "I Put a Spell on You" and the closing "Child of My Kingdom," contrarily, are almost as fine examples of British R&B as you're going to find. Yes, it does all add up to a peculiarly lopsided album, but it's still a masterpiece.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small, neat, circular cutout hole in one of the corners

-        Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams  (nothing significant)

-        Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
