Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label/Format: Reaction with matt surfaces and a gentle hint of texturing. These include the first credits, including ‘Apple publishing’ and logo as seen on my pictures.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with a few quite light spindle marks. The record plays superbly with barely anything unwanted at all.

Rarity: The album itself is moderate, but finding the first issues that include the much scarcer fully laminated cover is considerably more difficult. Especially so in mono with a beautiful looking record that plays close to perfection. This copy on offer is a real beauty and another from the collection purchased new by one owner who cover-protected his records and plays them very sparingly with due care.

Musicians: Eric Clapton – guitar, vocals; Jack Bruce – bass guitar, harmonica, vocals; Ginger Baker – drums, vocal.

Album Information: Arguably, the world’s most famous blues-rock, power trio’s greatest album – a classic issue which still sounds wonderfully fresh. Clapton, Bruce and Baker’s most consistently perfect studio album. The Reaction copies are something to treasure, with it’s superb psychedelic cover artwork (by Martin Sharpe, here on this very first issue fully laminated) and wonderful dynamic mono sound. When found in such clean condition, they are a thing to treasure. The mono mix is superb and very different from the stereo version – both are essential. ‘Disraeli Gears’ peaked at 5 and 4 respectively in the UK and US, very commendable in a year that saw the issue of so many wonderful records. The beautiful vibrant coloured cover perfectly matched the fashion for the time for a psychedelic London. The blues feel of the band was slowly slipping away and the brilliant surreal lyrics of Pete Brown suited Jack Bruce’s finest vocals. The words ‘classic’ and ‘essential’ are definitely not over-used on this album. Early copies of this record, when found in either mono or stereo are so often trashed, simply played to destruction, with unlistenable distortion, groove wear and scratches, this 1968 pressing has more than just survived, it’s a beauty and plays with phenomenal punchy warm sound with hardly anything unwanted. The fully laminated cover pictures should speak for themselves, an age-defying gem that even includes its 097 date-coded inner sleeve, meaning it was manufactured in September 1967.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): a single format and laminated on BOTH sides. This means the spine was protected as well, many of the front only laminated later ones has no spine protection and often eroded very quickly. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day with ‘Patents Pending’ text, includes the 1967 date-coded polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Lamination: Supreme artwork and one of the landmark covers of it’s era, this one of the most stunning examples I have seen in many years. So famous and desirable and seen to absolute maximum advantage when fully laminated. A piece of vintage art, the colour depth and freshness fully retained on these very shiny surfaces that have minimal traces of creasing and no lifting at all – what a massive plus that is. Even under light, any hint of dulling around the rim is ultra faint and barely even registers in average room light. A cover with several laminate ends with fine exposed strips, but even these show lilttle wear at all. Blemishes?, well a very small rub on the front bottom left corner tip and an equally small rub on the bottom of the right edge, for a 51-year-old cover, we are talking minuscule, being honest, this cover comes very close to reminding of as-made. One to hold and view, it takes you directly back to the psychedelic 60s and it will prove immensely difficult to match, let alone find much better.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both folds are laminated, unscuffed, smooth and straight. The top practically as-made. The card panel end on the back is slightly longer than the fold in manufacture, so this has thickened a little on its right, a purely natural trait on any storage edge and almost impossible to avoid.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still mostly very sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record entered on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. The exposed strips where the laminate ends being quite wide, clean and hardly worn or aged.

Spine and Text: Naturally thin, but still in practically as-made condition, and that is nigh-on immaculate as-seen. Solid and still straight with no bowing and any hint of compression minimal. As stated already, this first cover had this crucial area laminated, so all the text is fully present and in this case perfectly centred as-seen. The small details make the difference between average and exceptional. What also sets this apart, is the total lack of spine edge hairline creases, so the entire spine is rigid and strong. These are seldom seen looking this neat and fresh.

Corners: A small rub on the bottom front left tip, any others tiny with excellent or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: This is a cover to hold and admire, that stunning artwork beneath lovely clear barely dulled or aged laminate is a thing of genuine beauty. Now over 51-years-old, one that has hardly changed at all. Cover-protected and gorgeous, the difference immediately apparent, this could even prove a major upgrade for many collectors, and most should treasure it. This an absolute genuine 1967-made original.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): marked down only for natural darkening of the white paper which is only quite mild and only reminds of its considerable age as politely as possible. This mostly near the seam edge adhesive areas. This one date-coded 097 (September 1967), so made a few weeks prior to the album’s release in November which is perfectly correct for one of the earliest copies ever made (again, check all those ‘1’ matrixes detailed above). Polylined and neat as seen through crisp untorn window circles, minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with modest, and very careful plays on the evidence of the playing surfaces and sound with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a fantastic first issue mono record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will match, let outperform this ultimate first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp whe played on a standard stereo system. I am certain this record has been played very lightly, a few spindle marks on the labels certainly do not prove otherwise as some owners used the labels to guide and locate the hole, especially on stereo radiograms which were commonly used in the day. This has been very well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, it has to be one of the very best mono originals I have ever heard and it was put to disc whilst play-grading for my own future listening pleasure anywhere. It will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and merits my highest recommendation. Like the cover, this record could prove a huge upgrade for some fans and collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
