Label Conditions: Both look lovely: very clean and still fresh, and even though spindle marks are around the moderate level, they show little being fine and faint. More apparent under angled light of course. The playing surface have some light surface marks, but can I reassure any interested collector quickly – this record plays with little short of pristine sound with nothing unwanted.

Rarity: This classic in mono is hard to find in such clean condition. I have seen a few copies that may appear lesser played without marks that have sounded way inferior to this copy. And the cover, well it’s an absolute beauty with the shine of a mirror, barely any wear at all on the impossibly prone back, it even has a totally unworn spine with all text intact, this too with no laminate protection on that area (please see my close-up picture). Most all, will be rubbed, grubbied and the text eroded to none. For looks, the cover will prove near impossible to find better and the record, for sound, is simply outstanding.

Brief Artist & Album Info: One of many classic debuts from the mid 1960s, Cream were a British supergroup in their infancy. It features five non-band titles and not a composition credited to Clapton at all - but with the quality of material on offer, did it really matter? Brilliant virtuoso blues-rock, the Cream legend began here. This is a truly breathtaking early-pressed mono example that sounds immaculate from the very beginning to the very end with nothing to fault. I had the pleasure of playing this at high volume, and quite honestly it left me aghast. Rarely have I experienced a mono copy of this album with such impeccable sound. The sheer power and details from this beautful record were astonishingly good - this plays with audiophile sound quality and connoisseur’s of the mono format will treasure this. Any of the light surface marks are merely superficial with no audio effect at all. The cover, so highly prone to wear, laminate issues and creasing is in absolutely beuatiful condition too – it really does remind of new bar a few fine edge hairlines that barely any example will ever avoid as a bare minimum. One of the few I have seen with fully present, unworn text and barely any wear on it’s entire length at all. Classics of this era so rarely show in such lovely condition.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: the back rarely escapes significant grubbiness and ringwear. The spine text is usually badly rubbed or eroded totally and the front, for whatever reason is rarely seen devoid of heavy creases, major rubbing and dulling or huge unsighly laminate lifts.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): marked down slightly due to fine creases – this grading hardly tells the real fact – a cover that will prove nigh-on impossible to find much better. A single, front laminated design, this laminate protects the top and bottom edges but NOT the spine that clearly makes it highly vulnerable to wear. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and includes the ‘Patent Pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: Being a dark cover made with quite thin card, this will show all forms of wear more than many, hence this is often seen tired and scruffy looking. This front looks hugely impressive – there are a few fine surface creases, mostly on the top and bottom edges, just one equally fine half moon on Clapton, these have minimal visual impact at all. The huge positives outweight these minor negatives. Firstly, all the lamiante is solidly adhered with no lifting or blistering at all, this initself, is unusual but hugely welcome on such a dark cover. This retains an incredible shine, freshness and clarity with practically zero traces of any friction rubs or dulling and the fine exposed strip on the right opening edge pristine. This gleams like light shining on ice and is nigh-on devoid of any surface marks at all. A gorgeous front of near connoisseur standard and totally blowing-away it’s huge age.

Cover Back: A back that never ages well and is massively prone to all forms of wear time, handling and mistreatment can subject it too. This has to be the cleanest I have ever seen and apart from the odd tiny surface blemish or two (but look very hard), it really does remind of new. One practically always seen grubby and rubbed, this has barely anything and the lack of ringwear and creasing is great news. A back of truly outstanding quality.

Top Edge: Unworn, ultra smooth and very straight.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same with just a trace of mild thickening to the back panel towards the right corner (this being ultra critical).

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, ultra sharp with no burring or thickening with no chipping or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Quite possibly the best spine I have seen on this cover. Very solid, fairly quite thin in manufacture, this appears uncompressed and still straight. As stated above, the laminate did not cover this spine, hence the text is usually seen missing or badly eroded. Not only is this very pale ultra clean and ungrubbied, ALL text is fully present and totally unworn as can be seen on my close-up picture. Not something you will see too often.

Corners: All corners and tips are immaculate, as made with no wear, creasing or dinking. The shape for all is very pointed, simply as made.

Cover Summary: An superb example, few early monos will even get close to this. I emphasise, the fine creases on the front are only very light surface types, there are NO hard creases on this cover at all. It’s great beauty has barely diminished at all and that stunning clarity and shine, fully intact spine and ultra clean back are not to be taken lightly or for granted. The majority seen are a grubby, worn and tired looking mess – chalk and cheese – this should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white polylined inner that is date coded 117. The lining very clear indeed as seen through two very neat and crisp circle windows. Minimal creasing and secure edges but some glue darkening on the seams which appear as ‘stains’ on a couple of smallish areas. This has darkened a little, but at this fantastic age, I think it’s earned the right to.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading & Sound: EXCELLENT: a very nice looking mono record, very clean with fresh shiny playing surfaces with a few light surface marks that are totally superficial, non-penetrating and have NO sound. For a record that appears pressed in 1967, this retains incredible lustre and ‘newness’ that few mono records of this popularity ever have. Very impressive visually but it has been played several times, but this fact has not affected or degraded the sound in any way. Fully focused, crisp and distortion-free sound with no crackle and devoid of any pops and clicks, this is the audiophile’s dream copy and it was a privilege to hear. We all know what these vintage classics can and usually do look and sound like these days – I have said it so many times before. I can categorically state, this album has not been subjected to any worn out old stylus that reeked havoc to so many gems from the past. A record time has forgotten and a gateway into the recording studio itself when played on suitable and worthy equipment. This has a very loud and powerful mix, a harmonica blown at times to destruction and almost saturating the sound with intense volume and intensity. Beautifully produced with that classic mono dynamic delivery of the music, this the connoisseur’s mode of the day. Forget the minor surface blemishes, get this on to a quality turntable and enjoy, my visual grading does this scant justice – it plays little short of Mint as made, this too on a ultra revealing LP12 – a clinical stereo system this record was hardly designed for. This deserves a good home and I hope any winning bidder enjoys it as much as I did. The record is outstandingly good and the cover a joy – we live in the digital era, younger people used to horribly inferior down-loaded sound – records like this simply prove what they are missing. The famous-three themselves would surely approve of this one?

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
