CREAM "LIVE CREAM" Original U.S. white label promo stereo LP from 1970 complete with 2 1/2" round orange sticker on the front cover stating "Promotional Copy/ Not For Sale". The British supergroup consisting of Eric Clapton (lead guitar & vocals), Jack Bruce (bass & lead vocals) & Ginger Baker (drums) had broken up in 1968 after just 4 albums but the public was still clamoring for more material from the Blues Boom legends. Atlantic/Atco Records in the U.S. & Polydor in the U.K. scoured the vaults & came up with 4 unreleased tracks from their San Francisco concerts in 1968 that had been recorded for the live portion of "Wheels Of Fire" & the previously unreleased studio track of "Lawdy Mama" from the "Disraeli Gears" LP sessions in 1967. The live songs are extended jams of songs that appeared on "Fresh Cream"- two by Jack Bruce- "N.S.U." & "Sleepy Time Time", one by Ginger Baker- "Sweet Wine" & a rousing version of the Muddy Waters classic "Rollin' & Tumblin'". "Lawdy Mama" offers an interesting glimpse into the creative process. After the relative success of "I Feel Free", Cream was looking for a follow-up single & Atlantic's Ahmet Ertegun was convinced that Eric Clapton should sing it although his vocals had been few & far between up to that point. It was decided that Buddy Guy's "Lawdy Mama" was the perfect vehicle & a finished master was laid down & set aside. But producer Felix Pappalardi felt that the Blues song was too conventional & took the tape home to re-work it with his wife Gail Collins. A few days later, he presented a whole new creation to the group based on the basic structure of "Lawdy Mama" but with new lyrics & an up-to-the minute psychedelic feel titled "Strange Brew". Clapton loved the song & it was soon recorded & released as the next single by Cream backed with a great Clapton composition (co-written by Martin Sharp, the guy who did the cover for "Disraeli Gears") called "Tales Of Brave Ulysses". Now for the first time, we are able to hear the original recording of "Lawdy Mama" & it is quite powerful in it's own right. "Live Cream" still sounds great & it sold well enough that a second volume of out-takes "Live Cream, Volume 2" was released in 1972. Of course, Eric Clapton went on to Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominoes & solo success, Jack Bruce did some great solo albums, formed groups with Leslie West, Robin Trower & Gary Moore & Ginger Baker, perhaps Rock's greatest drummer explored Jazz Rock with Ginger Baker's Air Force, joined Clapton in Blind Faith, formed the Baker-Gurvitz Army & joined Bruce in BBM as well as establishing a studio in Africa. And let's not forget the 2005 reunion concerts- 37 years after their final concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Cream was definitely a high water-mark for these three consummate musicians. It will be remembered as one of the premier acts of the 1960s Blues Rock genre (Atco) SD 33-328 VG+/M.

Cover is intact w/no writing or tears & still looks nearly new w/only light edge wear & beginning 1" split on the top, middle. Atco 2 1/2" round sticker stating "Promotional Copy/Not For Sale" is affixed to the front cover on the upper left side. The promo record w/white Atco promo labels is marked "Sample Copy/Not For Sale" in small print on the right side above the "Stereo" designation. It has no spindle marks, scratches or scuffs & has received very few (if any) plays. In great shape after 56 years!
