The three albums Cream recorded in mono between 1966 and 1968 ("Fresh Cream"; "Disraeli Gears"; and white label promo-only mono version of "Wheels of Fire") represent some of the most eloquent arguments that the mono mixes are almost always superior to their stereo alter egos, at least as far as rock, soul and psych music is concerned. This, CREAM's first album is a classic example: for those who remember the classic intro to the opening track (I Feel Free) and its distinct rhythmic pattern : ta-tata-ta-ta…ta followed by the chorus and first verse, this mono mix will be an eye opener. It will pluck the magnetic membrane out of your speakers. And Eric Clapton's guitar sounds so sharp and edgy that you might confuse him for Jeff Beck or Jimmy Hendrix. Musically, Cream was never - ever - as superlative as on these 12 tracks, which clearly and with flying colors passed the test of time - much better , in fact, than their subsequent albums did.As I! noted, the album contains the ultimate version of their first single ("I feel free") as well as a couple of tracks which Cream made famous (NSU; Sleepy Time and - in particular - gorgeous remake of Skip James' "I'm so glad" which would make the old blues master shine with pride. Speaking of blues, this is the most bluesy of all Cream albums, and it carries with it the air of R&B, syncopation and phrasing directly reminiscent of this indigenous American music form. This album was last issued in mono in 1968 and was discontinued in this, original mono form shortly thereafter, which is a shame, because this is the only viable way of hearing this beautiful music. Don't miss an opportunity to own the very first, original version of the very first album by the very first super-group ever.
Note: some record books and price guides claim that the original US pressing of this album came out without the song “I feel free”. This, to put it mildly, is a blatant misinformation. Only first UK pressings did NOT contain this track. All US pressings, this one included, did indeed include “I feel free”.
THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) CAUTION! The vinyl is only GOOD TO GOOD+, with multiple, numerous, scuffs which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with bearable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and some pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(d) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 10:1.
(e) White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.
(f) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS ONLY ABOUT GOOD+ (G+).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

- Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams
- Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)
- Cover has some ring wear. On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5.
- The cover has a few visible scratch marks on the front side
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)
