Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably their finest ever album, but all their early records are excellent. Always distinctive for style and sound with one of the finest vocalists from this period, John Fogerty, he rarely sounded better than on this wonderful issue. The very first song, the lengthy ‘Ramble Tamble’ gets the album off to a spectacular start, CCR get heavy and this song has the most wonderful riff that even Black Sabbath would have been proud of. A repetitive chord sequence that builds and then the lead guitar kicks in, this is great stuff. Also included are the magnificent ‘Up Around the Bend’ and ‘Who’ll Stop the Rain’, always sounding so much better on the original album rather than compilations and the penultimate tour de force, the long version of ‘I Heard it Through the Grapevine’ clocking in at over 11 minutes. What an absolute classic this album is. This a lovely example with laminated cover, one to please many, if not most fans of this classic band.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably worth of the second (+). A single format with the front laminated, the back is matt and smooth. All folds are laminated and it ends on the back via the rear spine edge. Printed and made in England by the Upton Group and includes the plain white inner sleeve. Only slightly later reprintings excluded the laminate.

Cover Front and Laminate: As most covers always will, this looks better with laminate, it brings out the full deep colour of the picture, and this looks superb with a deep gloss finish. Any dulling around the rim areas very light and faint seen more critically under light. Fresh and clear with very little lifting at all, one on the bottom right corner tip and tiny traces on the bottom edge. Very little creasing, this is made with thin card and it will be seldom seen better or with fewer blemishes, this is highly attractive as seen.

Cover Back: The unprotected back is also very impressive with little to fault, the lack of ring wear and rubbing is somewhat unusual. Clean and fresh, any blemishes are tiny, very few and faint, a lovely back to compliment the high-quality front.

Top Edge & Bottom Edges: Both are very thin and fragile, but they have barely any wear, remaining smooth and unscuffed. Being so thin, and they really are, a little bowing is near impossible to avoid totally. So a little natural curl to the ends is the least to be expected.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening or burring minimal, even as seen viewed end-on, this is guaranteed untrimmed, the laminate end line clearly seen on the front which remains quite wide. The exposed card line totally unworn and clean. Record enters on this fragile edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, but quite thin, mainly straight with any compression little and light, the ends are quite deeply pinched in manufacture and longer than average. All text is perfect and unworn, also well centred on a narrow depth. More unusually, this spine has minimal hint of bowing.

Corners: Minimal tip rubbing with better than excellent shape retained, no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very impressive early laminated version which are usually preferable for collectors. That said, the matt versions are nice as they were textured. This the best example I have seen for quite some time, it should please many, if not most collectors

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain solid white unlined inner. Only very gentle discolouration of the paper, little creasing and all the edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): again arguably better. Any surface marks very fine, few and faint as seen under bright light, there are penetrating stylus scratches and the record plays impressively. A lovely visual copy with excellent shine and solidly pressed. A vintage early copy to please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb album plays up to and beyond it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sound minimal and faint, this 47-year-old record gave a very fine account of itself and my play-grade proved a pleasure. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic set. It could prove difficult to find a great deal better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
