For several years I worked closely with Graham Nash and his photography collecting activities. This print was given to me in 1980. At the time, Graham told me that this photograph, by Graham's friend Joel Bernstein, was intended to be the cover of the 1977 CSN album, but Stephen Stills, upon seeing the large dye transfer, had objected to the exposure of his missing tooth. So another, non smiling, shot from the session was used for the first issue of the LP. Later, the laughing shot was used, but only after Stephen's smile had been "corrected" by retouching.
This is one of the rarest photographs in existence of the boys on the yacht. I remember that Joel Bernstein, the photographer, complained a bit when Graham gave me this print :"I don't even have one". I know of no other print of this un-retouched photo. Even Graham does not have one. To my mind, the smile of Stephen is so genuine and well captured, that it is a shame that his sensitivity about his teeth resulted in the altering of a great photo.
This is a dye transfer print (one of the costliest and most permanent color processes of the time) by the legendary Bob Pace of Pace Colorprints. The budget for these successful albums was very large, so the cost of doing and re-doing dye transfers was insignificant. Thus, this print could be the only one made. The setup to make a dye transfer is very elaborate and to make only one print from the set up is very expensive. A single strike of a large dye transfer like this could cost well over $2,000 today.
The size of the original mount is 20 x 24 inches. This large dye transfer print is approximately 13 x 20 inches. The print has been in storage for years, and it is in superb condition. Because it is a dye transfer print, the colors are perfectly preserved.
