Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young : Deja Vu A1 / B1 1st Press Red Plum Atlantic / Faux Leather Gatefold 1970

I am including this album in this auction not because of its rarity (it's not!) but because of its condition.  It plays to such a high standard and there are no ticks, clicks, pops or static on show.  There is perhaps a little inner groove distortion on S1 towards the end but I imagine that's down to the recording / production  process.  S2 however is absolutely STUNNING!  The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is astonishing, I cannot fault it.

The textured cover is beautiful.  I mean how many from 1970 look as good as this?!  For a textured cover to have no surface rub is a genuine rarity and it looks like it has been sealed in an hermetically sealed vault!  The pasted on photo is in perfect condition and the embossed gold lettering is still clean, 'as new' looking.  I think a Near Mint+ grade is deserved here it is that good.  The original Plastic Bags inner (dated 1070) is in excellent shape with not too much wear.

This first press has the A1/B1 matrix and the Copyright Control / Warner Bros credits on the red / plum labels.  The production credits are on the bottom half of the labels also.

Visual description

The vinyl is in excellent condition and still holds a strong glossy look with no marks or scratches.  Under a bright light I can see some faint hairlines but there is nothing that stands out, they are purely superficial and can only be seen when you tilt the vinyl at a certain angle.  There is no groove or surface wear and the Atlantic labels are so clean with only some spindle wear around the inner spindle ring.

Play grading

The acoustic intro on 'Carry On' plays perfectly and the opening vocal section plays with genuine precision.  The depth here is the real stand out feature as well as the clarity of course and every melodic vocal and instrumental piece plays with stunning quality.  The audio is so clean and 'fresh' and even the fade out has no background.  Easily Mint start to the album.

'Teach Your Children' is so close to that with only a small number of insignificant statics.  They are so quiet and totally non-intrusive and Mint- is still fair.

The intro on 'Almost Cut My Hair' is very strong and clear and the opening vocal has no intrusion.  There is just a minor touch of vocal distortion but it is so minor, nothing to worry about.  Stills didn't want to include it because he wasn't keen on Crosby's vocal so perhaps that has something to do with it!  From then onwards it plays powerfully with no ticks, clicks, pops or static.  Let's say Near Mint

The intro and opening vocal section on 'Helpless' play without fault and the chorus is more or less the same with hardly any distortion.  It continues in much the same way with no actual interference and only the bare minimum of inner groove distortion.  In some ways I don't like to use the word distortion - it's just the audio isn't quite as clear as it could be but only a shade below.  I'm just too honest for my own good!  Near Mint

'Woodstock' then plays with very impressive audio.  There is no interference and for a final track it is sonically very strong and clear.  Quite a powerful number of course and for a vinyl version it can't really be faulted.  Another Near Mint track.

The 'intro' on 'Deja Vu' has no background at all and the opening vocal section impresses on every level.  The clarity and depth is stunning and this standard is maintained as it progresses.  This is as good a version that you could wish for.  Every note is so clean and warm and Mint is well deserved.

The classic 'Our House' plays beautifully from start to finish with no intrusion.  Once again the clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is second to none.  The measurement of how ever-present a track is?  How often it has featured in TV programmes down the years!  Nash's lead vocal is perfect here and this melodic tracks plays with imperious quality from start to finish.  Not bad for song with a number of quiet sections.  Mint

'4 + 20' is almost the antithesis to the previous track with its dark theme and I'm glad to say it plays with wonderful clarity and no interference.  A superb little number and Mint is again fair.

'Country Girl' and its three separate sections plays with exceptional audio throughout.  It has such a strong melody and it's here in all its glory!  The sonic 'landscape' is so impressive and if the final vocal section has any inner groove distortion it is kept to an absolute minimum.  This is a superb rendition and Mint- is very much deserve.

This is a stunning side of music!  The more powerful 'Everybody I Love You' ends proceedings with great clarity and definition once more.  There are no ticks, clicks etc and the audio is so clean, sharp and powerful.  A Mint- conclusion for sure.

The Faux-Leather Gatefold & Inner Sleeve

As stated the textured gatefold is in fantastic condition with barely any wear, arguably none!  The 'thick' edges are pristine and the spine is as wide and clean as it first was when first produced.  The corners are equally as impressive and the opening edge is in great shape also with only a couple of minor crimps.  The front cover is stunning, it has no marking and the gold embossed lettering is still perfectly clean.  The pasted on photo is still also 100% attached.  The back cover is so clean with only a couple of tiny indents next to the left edge and the inside of the gatefold is immaculate, the inner spine is totally undamaged.  I hope I have described it well!  I cannot imagine there is a better one out there and Near Mint+ more than does it justice.

The poly-lined Plastic Bags... inner (dated 1070) is in excellent condition with no side splits or tears.  There is some creasing and some age related fading around the edges as is common.  One small spot also.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
