Original CLEAR WAX press of this Italian MONSTER! Crying Steel lp is still in SHRINK and the whole package is EXCELLENT! (I almost want to say NEAR MINT but I wont). Only Italian record in a traditional vein better than this?? DANGER ZONE
Crying Steel was one of the greatest realities in the Italian underground of the 80s. This On the Prowl album came two years after the debut Mini LP Crying Steel and it gave the band a quite big relevance here in Italy. At the time, most of the bands were forced to play in small clubs and even for this great band the history was not merciful. Like many of the 80s Italian metal bands, also Crying Steel had the skills to emerge but something went wrong and after this release the band remained on hold and after awhile they split up. The main cause could have been the frustration because it’s hard to keep playing music when just a small part of the people care about you and this is the case of many bands at the time in Italy.
On the Prowl is a superb, powerful example of heavy metal. We can find power metal hints for the opener, “No One’s Crying”. The speed is immediately quite high and this involves the bass drums mostly. The riffs are melodic and quite fast at the same time, conserving the hard rock style that is perfect to give the right heaviness. The vocals are melodic and quite high-pitched in different moments, especially for the refrain and this adds more catchiness. We continue with “Changing the Direction” and this time the approach is far more in melodic metal style with the keyboards inserts and the mid-paced progression. This track is always great and this calmer attitude really gives you the idea of how much Crying Steel was good at this style too, without forgetting the awesome catchiness this song has!
“Struggling Alone” features a darker style but with the quite heavy touch of the guitars. The tempo is mid-paced and this contributes in raising the epic/melodic side of this music. Surely the crystal clear production is perfect to give the right light to all the instruments but the band’s touch is enviable and truly soft when it comes to recreate melodic/dreaming passages through arpeggios and lead guitars lines. Nothing is excessive and everything is voted to a precise and delicate balance. “Fly Away” is more dynamic for the structures without being that fast. The riffs are always excellent is style and the refrain is always there to be sung loud and easy to be remembered. The more melodic sections often contain the keyboards passages but they are quite short and they are there just to support the more melodic guitar style.
The B side of my vinyl opens with “Upright Smile” and its rock ‘n’ roll attitude for the riffs. The vocals are always melodic but sometimes they are “deeper” and almost whispered. The tempo is constantly mid-paced and the melody reaches its climax by the guitar solo that has also a sad touch inside. “The Song of Evening” is a return to speed because the bass drums beats are always with us and the riffs feature more palm muting parts even if the structure remains catchy and harmonious. The group is just a bit more impulsive here and we needed it. “Alone Again” is a superb, sad ballad and here we can even notice the band’s skills in this style. I’m sure that if this song had been released by another band in the USA, for example, now it would be famous.
“Thundergods” was the Italian metal anthem for a long time back in those days and I can understand why. This song is faster, always catchy and incredibly dynamic. The last “Shining” is another ballad to end this awesome work. Crying Steel was absolutely amazing in passing through different styles with strength and quality. On the Prowl is their strongest output and it has to be rediscovered somehow. Crying Steel is history for the Italian panorama.
