Here is a fine 3-LP box set by the rarely-recorded symphonic band from
California State University at Los Angeles (at one time known as
Los Angeles State), under the able direction of composer/conductor William H. Hill.
who remained at the school through 1982. Hill is best known for
winning the prestigious Ostwald Award in 1977 for his band composition,
Danses Sacred and Profane, but he has also composed other band gems,
including Concerto for Euphonium and Band, Saint Anthony Variations,
Sonitus Revelations, and Symphony for Band. His Sioux Variants and
Elegy for a Watchmaker are heard here on this album. Also of note
are the performances of the narrated piece, Selections from Ringing Brothers
Circus Band Library, which takes of an entire record side, and the innovative
Music For Winds, Piano, & Percussion by flutist Reuben Salazar, who
performs on the piano for his own composition.
