CUBAN CULT MUSIC
Label: Disc New York / 1512-1513-1514
You are bidding on the original three 10 inch 78rpm set of discs done by Harold Courlander. (b: 9/18, 1908 - d:3/15, 1996)
He was an American novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist, an expert in the study of Cuban and Haitian life.
The author of 35 books and plays and numerous scholarly articles, Courlander specialized in the study of African, Caribbean, Afro-American (U.S.), and American Indian cultures.
He took a special interest in oral literature, cults, and Afro-American cultural connections with Africa.
The recordings on this project were all field recordings recorded both at live ceremonies as well as private performances done in Cuba for this project in 1947 (60 years ago).
There is an accompanying 8 page libretto with HIGHLY in depth text re: the recordings.
With rare black and white photos of AfroCuban musicians and Afro-Cuban instruments.
One of which shows three 'Bataleros' (Bata drummers) a young 'PABLO ROCHE' can be seen playing the 'Okonkolo'.
And I have been informed by N.Y.C. based master drummer, teacher and author, John Amira, that the musician pictured in the middle playing the 'Iya' is Pablo Roche's father, ANDRES ROCHE, AKA: "ANDRES SUBLIME"
The cover of the album features a fabulous painting by 'DAVID STONE MARTIN', perhaps the most famous and collectable artist of the jazz idiom during the 40's -50's.
David Stone Martin was a prolific illustrator who created over 400 classic album covers.
Much of his work was for the Norman Granz labels Clef, Norgran, and Verve, as well as JATP covers.
He was known for his depictions of Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Illinois Jacquet, and many others.
His work has been displayed at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian Institution.
(GOOGLE: "David Stone Martin" to see his many incredible LP covers)
This is the original 1947 cover as confirmed to me by 'RENÉ LOPEZ Sr.'
There was another three disc 78rpm album released, but without the David Stone Martin cover painting.
As well as 30 years later, a re-release on 33rpm by Ethnic Folkways Library. (Both with Pink and Blue cover)
However there were several songs not included from these original 78rpm's.
Items condition:
Discs 1514 and 1512 are in VG++ condition and are commensurate with 60 years, I've seen worse.
Disc 1513 has a crack in it running from outer edge to the discs lable.
The accompanying libretto is in very good condition with very little discolor for being 60 years old.
The cover including painting is in excellent condition (see photos below)
The outer edge of the three sleeve album book have no cracks, no tears!
Please view photos:
'PABLO ROCHE' seen on left of photo.
ABAKÚA / ARÁRÁ / PALO / IYESÁ / BATA / BEMBÉ / YUKA / GÜIRO / CARABALI
