Omaha, Nebraska post-hardcore sorts Cursive release a reissue of 2003's cello-laden The Ugly Organ - the album which proved to be their most creative and unique at that point in time. They seemingly found their own sound and made their influence from growing up listening to Dischord label bands a bit less obvious. There's still that heaviness that fans were first endeared to them for: 'Art Is Hard' is brutal noise rock capable of inspiring circle pits with dynamic shifts in tempo. On the other hand 'The Recluse' leans into a more chamber pop sound evoking the less primal and more measured side. And 'Harold Weathervein' is a fascinating melange of found sound, samples and scrappy lo-fi blended in with something widescreen and cinematic. It's more a movie soundtrack than a typical rock song and indicative of their fearless creativity at the time. It's no wonder this album is still looked back on as a high water mark for the band.
