Description
Curtis Lewis 8-song double-sided 33.33 RPM 12" METAL ACETATE album (no master/catalog # or record label info). This appears to be a SUPER RARE 60's vintage acetate, which according to my extensive web research, most likely went unreleased. Although there's no song titles listed, I did a fair amount of web searching to determine the titles of 6 of the 7 songs (1 song appears twice), with 6-songs included on Side 1, they are: "Red Rosey Bush" (2:43), "Green Rocky Road" (3:09), "See See Rider" (4:17), "Muleskinner Blues" (2:52), "Deliah's Gone" (2:16) and "Roll On Rosey" (3:19 aka "Rosie"), and there's 2-songs on Side 2, they are: "That Is Love" (4:05 I'm unsure if this is the title) and 5 incomplete takes of "Muleskinner Blues" (3:06 take #2, 3, 4, 5 and 6). Interestingly, the first song on Side 2 clearly features a different vocalist, as well as being in a different style than the rest of Side 1, and I'm sure that with some research, you may just be able to determine who this vocalist is. One thing I did notice, is that this singer can be heard speaking during the incomplete takes of Muleskinner Blues, so it's possible he is also one of the instrumentalist on the rest of the songs.
By listening to these tracks, it appears that all were recorded with the same general instrumentation, including acoustic guitars, acoustic bass, bongo/conga, flute, tamborine, piano and female background vocals in addition to the lead vocalist. Throughout you'll notice there's quite a creative effort to push these "traditional" and "folk" songs beyond the folk bounderies into a much more soulful vibe, which turns out to make these songs very emotional and exciting. I did notice in my research to determine the song titles, that Curtis Lewis took some liberty with the lyrics of these traditional and well-known folk songs to suit his own style. I can't say whether or not any of these songs were ever released, but if that's the case, it would have been such an incredible injustice, as these songs would have made for an amazing release!!!
While searching by the name Curtis Lewis and each of the song titles, I found nothing through Yahoo, Google or Youtube, but I did find an African American composer named Curtis Reginald Lewis on Wikipedia, which shows that he wrote many popular and jazz standard songs, by artists such as Billy Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Diana Krall and many others. If the Curtis Lewis on this acetate is the same as Curtis Reginald Lewis, there's the chance that these songs possibly went unreleased, as Curtis Reginald Lewis passed on May 23, 1969. Unfortunately, I can't say whether or not the Curtis Lewis on this acetate is the same as Curtis Reginald Lewis the composer, but that could lead to some intriguing research.
PLEASE NOTE: I have over 30 ACETATES and TEST PRESSINGS up for auction this week, along with a mixture of 100 or more 45's and LP's! With that said, please make sure you check them all out! If you win multiples, I'll combine them into one package to save you $$$ on S/H!!!
Just a note for those unfamiliar with metal acetates - these records are extra heavy from the center of the record being made of metal. These records are the first versions ever made from the master tapes (even before test pressings or promo copies and sound the best) for the purpose of feedback on the mix by those involved in the recording process. These discs were expensive to make, so very few, if no more than one are usually made and as you can imagine, these discs are quite RARE and sometimes the mixes can be different from the final release. These were never meant to be available to the public, so in you're a fan or collector, now's your chance to get something extrememely RARE!!!
The vinyl on this acetate is in very good - very good plus condition and plays solidly, but with some light noise hear and there, which doesn't effect the enjoyment of this disc. I didn't attempt any physical cleaning on this fragile Acetate, for fear of damage. If you wish to physically clean it or even import it into your computer to edit it to make it sound as pristine, I'll leave that up to you. You can hear sound samples of each song in the clip attached below totaling 13.5-minutes, which is from the actual record in this auction, and you'll notice that I've given a sample from the beginning/intro and ending/fade/outro of each song on this acetate to give you an idea of condition, sound, mix and lyrics. There's a small amount of sticker reside to the Side 1 label, which shows darkness from being stored. Please see the photos below to view the label condition. This is a really RARE & COOL Curtis Lewis/Acetate collectible, make sure you bid today!!!
