CYNDI LAUPER Shes So Unusual 1983 Portrait 1st Press FR38930 Girls Just Want NM
Cyndi Lauper's debut solo album arrived in October 1983 and immediately rewrote what a female artist's first record could accomplish. She's So Unusual produced four top-five singles — "Money Changes Everything," "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Time After Time," and "She Bop" — the first debut album by a female artist to achieve that. The record moves between new wave, pop rock, and synth-pop with a Queens-bred irreverence that felt genuinely new. Lauper's voice — elastic, theatrical, and completely her own — carried songs written by Prince, Robert Hazard, Jules Shear, and Tom Gray alongside her own originals. The album won two Grammy Awards at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist. It has sold over 7 million copies in the US and 16 million worldwide, and was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2019.
This is an original US first pressing on Portrait Records, FR 38930, manufactured by CBS Inc. The lacquer on Side 2 carries a 1E first cut designation — the first cutting of the master lacquer for that side.
Mastered at Sterling Sound, New York. Sterling Sound was founded in 1968 and has been one of the premier mastering facilities in the world throughout its history, with engineers including Lee Hulko, George Marino, Greg Calbi, and Ted Jensen cutting records there across every major genre of the LP era.
Produced by Rick Chertoff for Red Sox Music Productions, Inc. Executive Producer Lennie Petze. Recorded at Record Plant, New York City.
