(Ex/NM) This copy has the original unlaminated cover (later copies were laminated and had the 'Electric Rock 2000' sticker), which is in excellent condition throughout. There is a very small amount of wear along the spine, including a patch 0.5" long where felt tip pen has been used to disguise colour lifting. However, there are no splits or tears, and the front and back panels are pretty clean. The initial 'R' has been written lightly in biro on the top left-hand corner. There are two areas, 3" x 2", either side of the track listing on the back cover which show some colour lifting from where stickers had been placed. There is no tearing of the paper surface where stickers have been removed; the glue in the stickers has simply absorbed some of the ink from the cover and so these patches are paler than elsewhere. The text is still clearly legible, though. Each track listing has a small dot or cross by it in biro. The vinyl, and this is the important part of course, is near immaculate. There is a light sheen over the surface, which looks like old cleaning fluid, a couple of small fingerprints on the run-in groove, and dust on the surface, but with professional cleaning I'm sure that the vinyl would come up with a full gloss. Other than that there are just light paper scuffs, which should not affect play in any way. I have not play-graded it because it's so valuable. You're lucky to find a copy of this release available at all, and would be extremely unlikely to find one in better condition than this.
“Can Soundtracks is the second album of The Can but not album no. two” states the cover blurb. This album was released between their first LP, Monster Movie, and what was to become their seminal work, Tago Mago. (NB: I have an original copy of Tago Mago also listed on eBay at the moment.) This is a collection of pieces recorded for films in 1969 and 1970, and as such is a fascinating record of the transition from the Malcolm Mooney to the Damo Suzuki period. And it contains some great tracks, that you wouldn't think were film music: Tango Whiskyman end the epic Mother Sky – commonly regarded as the only Can track which sounded better in the recorded version than in any live performance – are the highlights for me.
This LP was originally released in Germany only, as at this point Can had not made a name for themselves outside of their home country. In fact, it was to be 3 years before this LP was released, on United Artists, outside of Germany, and this was in a different cover which used a still from their 1972 free concert (which also appeared on the back of 1972’s Ege Bamayasi). This original German Liberty release is incredibly scarce and sought-after, and I have never seen a guide price for it. The only time I have seen an (albeit oblique) reference to its value was in Record Collector magazine in 1987. This did not even attempt to value this LP, simply stating this it is “like gold dust to collectors”. It is very seldom seen on the market. You probably already have a later UA or Spoon copy, and know how great this album is. This is a great opportunity to own this fantastically rare original – a piece of Can history.
