Can - The Lost Tapes 5 x LP Box Set SPOON55 (Spoon/Mute, UK, 2012) Box Set with 5 LPs, Booklet and Poster.
This motherlode of unreleased & live Can material is an unbelievable treat for fans - a bit like when The Bootleg Series landed for Dylanites. For a band who have already released a few excellent archival releases - the quality of the material here is pretty high - and the sound quality is generally excellent. A top quality archival release and absolutely essential for Krautrock afficianados.
This is NOT a bootleg. I bought it from a reputable record shop at the time of release.
Condition (I Grade NM / EX / VG+ / VG / VG- / G / F)
Sleeve/Box Condition - VG+ - Relatively this still is pretty excellent. The top of the box has expanded a little and is ever so slightly mishapened from the box bottom. Some storage wear to the outer box, but nothing serious. Some of the inner sleeves, which are quite flimsy (and sadly not polylined) and not best served by design - are a bit creased or have abrasions - one has a slight but ineffectual tear (though no splits). The book and poster are virtually untouched, though the book has some miniscule corner wear.
Record Condition - VG+ - NM The discs have, at most, been played a few times. The paper sleeves have left a few handling marks / hairlines on the records, and the lack of rigidity inside the box has meant some of the records have slight handling warps. Noteworthy imperfections - there is a tiny scratch on the run in of disc 1 that causes a few moderate clicks - but this doesn't run for long. Disc 5 has a factory 'dimple' - which doesn't look too nice, but just causes about 4-5 pops and doesn't cause any jumps or skips. Disc five also has a light scratch - but it's effects aren't really noticeable. Play is, otherwise, excellent - surfaces very quiet - good sonics, with the occasional odd whiff of crackle (just needs a dust/wet clean, i reckon).
Who wants this? A Can / Krautrock obsessive does to hear / own this set. This vinyl edition is now out of print. Collectors and those most fastidous about condition might want to settle for a sealed copy - but should be aware that even a sealed MINT copy could have any of the issues above, or worse - and you can't simply return it to your retailer for a replacement. While this has some very slight imperfections - it mostly plays like new (which it almost is) and would make fans wanting to engage with the music very happy indeed! (especially if they regret not getting it first time round).

- I PLAY GRADE virtually all of my items, as well as looking visually. Always read the description. It will normally tell you what you need to know.
- I remove records from their outer sleeves to avoid splitting. All records are packed in a plastic sleeve for extra protection.
