Cannibal Corpse have always been in my top ten favorite death metal bands . I've been a fan since their debut dropped in 1990 and have religiously followed them since . This album is brutal and will leave you torn through . Sure, the cover art is a far cry from the graphic Tomb Of The Mutilated or Butchered At Birth but you'd be ignorant to dismiss the connection to Eaten Back To Life ; two blood spattered figures in blue jeans . As stated by Paul Mazurkiewicz, this release is a summary of the band's near 30 year career . It blends the catchiness of Vile , the murderess prowess of Tomb Of The Mutilated , the trashiness of Torture , the muscle of Bloodthirst and savagery of Kill into one hideous soundtrack . Erik Rutan has done an exceptional job on production once again ; all of the instruments breathe with rawness and clarity . Unlike it's dynamic predecessor , Red Before Black pummels you from start to finish and is devoid of any technical flashiness . Paul's drums hit hard and fast . Pat's solos are lethal . The rhythm section with Alex's spidery bass is tight without being overly polished . Corpsegrinder puts in another dementedly aggressive rapid performance , despite not once using his high pitch screams , and adds to the violence of the music . This is a band who has not taken a lengthy hiatus between albums for nearly 30 years . They have toured relentlessly and pushed themselves to make each album sound more vicious than the next . They have not released another masterpiece like The Bleeding but Red Before Black proves that they could . This album has something to please all fans from every era of the band and I think that's what the band was aiming for . Some areas of the album fall into familiar territory but not enough to accuse the band of self-plagiarism . Red Before Black is Cannibal Corpse honing their knife into its finest edge . Press play and the next thing you know ... cold steel in your face . Long live this awesome band !
