NOTE : All LP’s have been cleaned and played through both sides (except where Mint) to determine an accurate grading as possible. If anything I have graded this album on the safe side as collectors will always have slightly different interpretations on quality. ********************************* A glorious and much sought after 1st pressing (on the respected Metromedia label) of this classic debut LP from The Carolyn Hester Coalition.
As a hip songwriter in the 60's Carolyn Hester hung out with Bob Dylan in New Yorks Greenwich Village scene cruising the coffee shops and campuses convinced that their political-folk messages could help change the world. Like many others riding the crest of folk music she turned to experimenting with substances and electric sounds towards the end of the decade with the advent of the psychedelic scene from which The Carolyn Hester Coalition emerged.
The album is a fine 1968 West Coast-style hippie fuzz folk rock-pop affair with Hester singing in a decidedly non-folky acid psych-garage-hard rock style. Solid all the way through, this album should appeal to fans of light trippie-dom ; "Magic Man" is probably the best known track here following its inclusion on the Hippie Goddesses compilation.
It doesn't take long for Hester's vocals to take hold making the album a very enjoyable listen. The excellent backing from bassist/keyboard player Dave Blume, drummer Skeeter Camera and lead guitarist Steve Wolfe works a treat on the aforementioned "Magic Man", the fuzz guitar propelled "East Virginia" and "Half the World" which are well above average psych/rock numbers. Occasionally Hester's folkie roots bob-up on "Tomorrow When I Wake Up" though overall this little gem harks back to the Jefferson Airplane period ... strong female vocals and great tracks that get better with every listen. The cover is really hard to find clean due to the dark background that shows up any shelf wear on most copies found... luckily this one is great.
The vinyl is VERY clean and shiny with unmarked Metromedia labels making this an terrific addition to any psych music library.
