Fred Raby was a young man known to hundreds of people in the East Tennessee area. During his short life he touched hundreds with his life and songs of his Saviour. Last year after almost a year’s fight he lost his battle to cancer and died at the age of 39. When one such as Fred dies we wonder what can properly be dedicated to his memory. To try to answer this I went to the cemetery which serves as Fred’s resting place. A cold slab of stone attests to the fact that Fred was born, lived and died. However, a cold slab of marble cannot reflect the life of one whose warm smile and radiant faith was like sunshine to so many. There is a house in north Knox County where Fred lived with his wife Judy and two daughters, Maylene and Freda. The unfinished additions testify to the uncertainty of life. But an unfinished house cannot be dedicated to one whose life was a completed work for Jesus Christ. Fred attended Deep Springs Church. The building there is a result in a large part to his labors. However, that labor as is the building has already been dedicated to God. I feel that there can be only one proper and fitting dedication to Fred’s memory and that is a collection of the songs that he loved so much. It is also only proper and fitting that this group should sing them. He loved these singers so much and their work together was a source of great joy and happiness. I am sure that the love that he had for Von, Orgel, Carolyn and Juanita was a well of consolation and comfort during those last few weeks when he fought such a courageous battle to live. For the joy, encouragement and peace that this group gave Fred those of us who loved him will be eternally grateful. Therefore, because the songs of his God meant so much to him and his singing so much to others, this collection is humbly dedicated to the memory of Brother Fred Raby and may they be a blessing to you as he was to so many of us.
