This famous gatefold LP set – a superb collector’s copy – from Columbia Masterworks (KL 5726, gray 6eye label*, US pressing, mono) captures the historic concert given at the Kennedy White House on 13 November 1961 by legendary cellist Pablo Casals and his remarkable colleagues, the violinist Alexander Schneider and the pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski. 

Their program on that unforgettable occasion consisted of: Mendelssohn’s Trio in D minor Op. 49 for Piano, Violin, and Cello, Couperin’s Concert Pieces (Suite) for Cello and Piano, Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro in A flat Major Op. 70 for Cello and Piano, and the Catalan folk song Song of the Birds for Cello and Piano. 

In attendance that evening, beside John F. Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy were Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, Leopold Stokowski, Samuel Barber, Elliott Carter, Alan Hovhannes, Gian Carlo Menotti, Roger Sessions, Virgil Thomson, Henry Cowell, Norman Dello Joio, Howard Handson, Roy Harris, Douglas Moore, Howard Hanson, Walter Piston, and Aaron Copland. 

Casals had first played in the White House for President William McKinley in 1898, and had last been heard there by Teddy Roosevelt in 1904.

The 84 year-old cellist played with undiminished mastery, in beautiful concert with his illustrious colleagues, turning in truly memorable performances, a moving occasion preserved here in this handsome gatefold 3-page LP set.

The interior panels of the gatefold jacket include numerous photos of this memorable occasion, as well as eloquent liner notes by New York Times Critic Paul Henry Lang. The striking cover photo, like those in the interior of the jacket jacket, was taken by Mark Shaw.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is slight bumping at corners, but that is all. Otherwise, the album appears virtually as new. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy and highly attractive – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
